Cam Chain Tensioner -- how does it work?

I am curious as to how this thing works.

    What would make it fail?

I am fairly confident that this is what is making my loud noise. Do they go out because of lack of oil pressure? Low oil? etc.

I am curious because if there is a bigger problem that needs to be addressed I would like to look into that as well.

    Thanks guys.

I assume you are asking about the VVT(cam adjuster) function. Read section 2.1.3 of this article. Clicky click. Low oil pressure will definitely affect the function of the cam adjuster and cause a rattling noise and a CEL from the cam position sensor.

    Thanks old guy.

That does sound like the part I was referring to.

The weird thing is that mine has gotten VERY loud at times but never has it thrown a check engine light. I am not sure if my oil pressure is lower than it should be. I also just recently did (like a week ago) did an oil change with 5w-40 so I don't think I would be low on oil either.

    This is just a headache

I have very little time to work on this car so its a hassle.

Does anyone know if outside temperature would have an effect on this as well? I almost feel like its at its loudest when its hot outside. I am not 100% on this but yesterday it was extremely loud during the day when it was 90 degrees, but not very loud at night when it was in the 60's. Heat thinning the oil?

    Thanks again guys.
