    Component speaker system

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
hey guys i've been searching around and reading for the past two days about upgrading sound since the stock speakers are blown on my a4, it is a 99 with non-bose system

What I am planning to do is keep the stock head unit and use an adapter to connect it to the aftermarket amp. I am planning to run all new wires from the amp and dynamat all the panels I can.

Here is what I have planned:

Front Doors - JL AUDIO VR525-CSI 5-1/4" COMPONENTS
    Rear Deck - (2) 6W0 - JL Audio 6.5" 4 Ohm SVC Woofers
JL Audio A4300 4-channel car amplifier
plus misc wires and amp power kit

What do you guys think? Is this a good setup? Will I encounter any roadblocks?

    Re: Component speaker system

Why are you going with the JL's? Im just wondering, im piecing together a similar setup.

    Pioneer AVIC F700BT
Infinity Kappa 50.9cs - component fronts
    Infinity Kappa 62.7i - rears
Alpine MRP-F300 - amp will feed nice balanced power to all 4 speakers (about 85watts RMS each)

Im hoping this blows the bose system in my old a4 out of the water!

    Re: Component speaker system

I thought about putting one 8 inch sub inbetween the two speakers in the rear deck but it would probably be to much trouble for what its worth. I have an 8 inch sub lying around but its 4 ohm and the kappas are 2 ohm so even a 5 channel amp wouldnt help me out. Probably not worth it.

Free air 8" subs tend to send like shit as well. Even if you built some type of enclosure for it, its hardly worth it.

    Re: Component speaker system

First off, thanks for all the help guys, i have to say this is the most receptive forum i have ever started on, usually whenever I start somewhere and ask a question, 10 people post up and tell me to search

Secondly, I am not dead set on the JL's, that was just my first plan. I wanted to see what you guys think.

So from what I can see, I should replace the woofer in the rear with some 6.5 coax speakers?

Also, the reason I didnt put a new headunit on the list, since all the kits I have found so far look ugly

Does anyone make a headunit that completeley takes up the space of the factory one?

    Re: Component speaker system

I did a system about 14 or 15 years ago with three of the original JL 8w6 subs in a Grand Prix and they performed way beyond what we expected. Very tight bass and hit like a pair of tens. I think they were powered by Adcom.

I've been contemplating a little system in my Avant with a 6-8" sub in the back of each front door so they would fire into the driver's and passenger's hips. I'd glass the panel to seal it and eliminate the door pockets. The door mids would be eliminated too. 5" mids in the kick panels as coaxes or with a pair of dynaudio 3" mid highs on the dash similar to the B&O A8 system. I'd mount the dash speakers on power mirror motors so tuning is easy and tweaking can be done at any time.

    Re: Component speaker system

No aftermarket radio is as wide as our stock decks. If I ever do the big system I'll also do a 10" touchscreen carputer. All it takes is trimming the center bar and moving the climate control down to the ashtray location.

this is what im doing on my 99.5 when i get the F700BT. No one should buy the D3 anymore now that the F series is becoming available. Much nicer unit and syncs perfectly with my iphone. Unless you of course can get the D3 for 300 bucks or something...

    Re: Component speaker system

Focal's are great, but for the money DLS and Dynaudio components sound better. For the ultimate setup I'd go alpine w205 HU, alpine passive crossover, Scan speak 18w components, morel supremo tweets. I wouldn't bother with anything high end if you are running it on the stock headunit because it will sound like crap.

    Re: Component speaker system

I dont know much about car audio, but why wouldn't you just build a high and low band pass from scratch instead of a alpine unit. Crossover is so important in HiFi that I would expect it to be similar. Due to alignment issues in a car what order crossover do people use for cars ? 4th order ?
Speak Scan Drivers are nice though nicer then Dynaudio?

Focal is one of the only companies i think does metal dome tweeters well

Most people placing SQ comps are running alpine pxa-h701 units in their car. 27 band parametric equalizer, 8 channel digital crossover with 8 channel auto/manual time correction. That's why. a high / low band pass could never pull any of the above. Ran together with the w205 unit and you can set everything from the HU.

Oh, it's fun. Easily pulled a black e46 m3 convertible that wanted to race yesterday on the 210 right about a mile before my exit. This is all without my clutch and mani yet. Will get those done soon and have some dyno's. I was told about 260-270awhp on 93, but i'll hold reservations on those #'s until I actually get it dynoed. the new 335's still pull way smoother across the band, but i'm actually really liking the boost at 3500-5500rpm for our elim kit. Conclusion, I will probably want to rebuild the motor similar to what eurocode has done to one of the b6's that redlines 8.5k rpm and gets full boost at 3k rpm. That car is sick, vids are up on youtube.
