    oil type for 3.0 engine?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
in the manual it says to use 0W-30 but 5W-30 and 5W-40 can be used if 0W-30 can't be found. i just wanted to get everyones experiences or knowledge about these oil weights/viscosity. Whats better? I am live in NYC so in the winter it gets really cold and in the summer it gets really hot!

Extra virgin olive oil of your brand choice. NOT CRISCO! The additives release 30+ extra HP every time you fill your tank with leaded 110 octane race gas.

Re: oil type for 3.0 engine?

I would use 5W-30 if I lived up north.
I use 5W-40 in the south because of the 90+ deg temps.

    If I had a 1.8, I would use 0W-40.

mobile 1 0w-40 is very good and cheaper than most other oil but some argue it's not full synthetic.
if you want to be fuzzy about oil, amsoil/redline/efl oil whatever you want to buy.

All 0-40w means is that the oil is constantly a 40 weight... Vs 5-40, where the oil is 5 weight when cold and 40w when hot

    I used Mobile 1 Delvac 5W40...
is this good for our 3.0 gasoline?

it seems it's mainly for diesel engines.

Not really. The 0W-40 indicates a "0" weight performance when cold and a "40" weight when hot. In theory a 0W-40 will circulate better at low temperatures than a 5W-40. A straight 40W oil is not an acceptable oil for any VAG motors.

Really... Thats not good then. So tell me, I have the 3.0 V6, its a 2004 a4 and I drive it like any 17 yr old would.. I drive it hard 75% of the time, and the other 25% is me taking it easy and driving the speed limit (lol) I drive about 100 miles a week and 40miles are highway ... what should I put in?

I think you misread my comment. A 0W-40 like you are running is perfectly acceptable for your application. A straight 40W would not be acceptable. It would not circulate properly through a cold motor.

    Cheers!

Re: oil type for 3.0 engine?

has anyone used this stuff... I used it in my Ford Explorer and I think I feel a difference but that could just have been my mind telling me otherwise...

My audi has just hit 60k and I need to service in about 4k and I was wondering if I should put some of this in with the Mobil 1 0-40 i use.... Also does this stuff work ok for 10k because I do the matience only when the car tells me to (apx every 10k)

Re: oil type for 3.0 engine?

With a non-turbo motor using a quality synthetic oil all you really need to do is change the oil and filter every 10K miles. At 60K miles there is no need to use Engine Restore or any other additives. I ran a VR6 for 150K miles that way and it was running strong when I traded it.

Old guy: You seem to know alot, what does that stuff necessarily do to a cars motor?? How does that restorer stuff actually do what it does?

Also at 60k, whats the deal with seafoam.... everyone seems to be using it..

Engine Restore is basically an oil thickener. If you have a worn motor it can help raise your compression a little. As long as you maintain proper maintenance intervals you really don't need stuff like that. Seafoam is one of several high detergent products used to help break up sludge build up in your motor. Because of the extreme conditions created by high turbo temperatures the 1.8T motor is susceptible to sludge build up. Especially if you go 10K oil change intervals with non-synthetic oil (as Audi originally recommended with the 3 year/free service warranty). Audi has since changed to a larger capacity oil filter and synthetic oil. Sludge build up is not really a problem with the 3.0 motor as long as you follow a normal maintenance schedule.

I tried 0W-40 Mobil 1 and it also seemed to burn off alittle more during the hot summer months than a 5W-40. I think the 0W-40 is more suited for the turbo's.

3.0 here too. SF Bay Area.

    Total INEO MC3 5w-30. every 7500 miles

    I've run 0-30 GC before.

I would never put M1 0-40 in anything. It was great several years ago, the new formulation, its no longer fabulous. Its not bad, its just not the sweet sweet elixir that it once was. Porsche used to and I think still says to use M1 right on the oil cap, even specifying 0-40, but most independent porsche shops that know anything at all, if they still use M1, they also pour in a host of additives to the oil, making it more like the M1 of years past.
