FINALLY got my clutch issue sorted out!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
well if you guys remember, i blew my southbend stg4 clutch about 3 weeks ago. got a new stg 5 thanks to mike hood and bro and i installed it on saturday. only, the clutch was not engauging completely. my foot was too the floor and it would only engauge about half way. bled the hydrolic lines. didn't help..

so pretty much my new clutch, just wasn't to spec. the tolerances were slightly off.. great, $600 for a slightly off clutch kit . thought i was going to have to pull the trans and start over with a new, possibly different clutch. but didn't want to of coarse.

thanks to OldGuy <----, im shiftin again with the best of them. he helped me A LOT along the way. walked me though a few things, as well as taught me a trick that he came up with when he didn't like his clutch engaugment point. basically you add to the rod inside the slave cylinder. he suggested 1/8". so had my dad fab me up one, switched out the rod(which is a bitchin good time as some of you know), and the car is running smoothly again.. and i don't believe there is any preload on the pressure plate/throw out bearing with 1/8". the slave cylinder seems to have absolutely NO "slack" in it. but is not pressing against the clutch. so im not worried about any issues down the road

also want to thank everyone else that helped in the whole process. Mike, Jake, Greg, and dougy too. thanks guys!

Do you have pictures of the Stg4 clutch that blew apart? Do you conclude it was heat that did it in?

Good to hear you got it working. Always a great feeling once you've overcome some major issues and found the answer.

not sure. but i had to lengthen the slave cylinder rod 1/8" over OEM just to get the clutch to fully engauge. which i shouldn't have had to. so either southbend got their tolerances off, or i just installed something a bit off. like the throwout bearing, im not sure. but it works now. so can't complain

yeah, here ya go dougy. you can see on the worn down feramic side(center of the clutch material) where it fused itself to the flywheel. had to pry it off pretty hard with a prybar..

weird though, i was under the impression that the organic side was supposed to not take heat well and fuse to the pressure plate

i don't think so. i know 2.8 passats, 2.7t A6's and allroads are the same. but it didn't list the B5 or any older audi's.

Re: FINALLY got my clutch issue sorted out!

You should not have had to change the length of the slave cylinder rod just to get the new clutch to engage/disengage. Something was misaligned and/or manufactured out of tolerance. I recommend you talk to the guys at SB to further understand this issue.

Old Guy increased the length of his clutch's slave cylinder rod because he didn't like how low the SB clutch engages and disengages. It was killing his bad knee. His clutch did work fine, he just didn't like the engagement point. It took me a few weeks to get used to it since the engagement point is down very low relative to the OEM clutch.

    EDIT:
I went back and reread your other thread where Old Guy was helping you diagnose. Did you take drop dimensions on your flywheel like he mentioned? Did you get a new throw-out bearing and pressure plate along with your new clutch disc? Did you resurface your flywheel for this new clutch (something tells me NO)?

I had told you in your orginal post that the FE side is the one that fuses itself...

It happens because the two materials do not grab at the same rate...I also told you that this has happened several times on my car, Charlies car and pretty much everybody I know with the OFE SS.

You may have confused the fact that many people have posted up that the organic side fo their clutch had come apart from the pressure plate, this is also an effect of the FE side fusing (literally welding) itself with the flywheel.

yeah, my old stg 4 was awesome. it engauged like 1-2" from when you start to depress the clutch. just barely put foot in and shift..

this one on the other hand

eh, i'll get used to it soon enough. it was a bit weird at first. almost stalled it like 4 times coming out of first. im just used to letting it out to the old engaugment point. gots to relearn

I was told that they would need to see pics of the disk/pressure plate stacked on the flywheel. I might look at doing the extended rod on my car too since my dual diaphram setup wont let me flat shift at 8500 rpm.
