Its not bs when you are trying to trade in. Even though edmunds and NADA are MUCH higher, the dealers (or at least they few I have gone to) use the KBB as their guide of choice. My trade-in value has dropped nearly $10000 in just a few months.

My 2007 S4 is at %50 of its original sticker. Granted I have 32,000 miles, but come on.

That is suprising. I just picked up an '06 with 16,800 on the odometer. KBB listed it in the range of $45K. While thie is 13K off sticker... it is no where near 50%. I ended up working a pretty good deal. Ended up paying around $20K off original sticker.... not nearly 50% as you have mentioned. Ouch. KBB does not have my car any where in the range of $29K. Not even close.

If I'm not mistaken the OP is referring to trade-in value while you're referring to dealer retail.

Sorry, dude, but I just don't understand why people buy cars like these and then get stressed about the depreciation. The financial aspect is ALWAYS going to be a losing proposition. You will take a huge loss. Accept that going in and just enjoy owning a superb car.

Dealer trade in sucks on any car, more so when you still owe a lot on it. The only exceptions are going to be the coveted models or very low production numbers. Ever tried finding an RS4 cpo dealers still want 55-58K for them.

I paid $26K for my 05 on a dealers lot. I can't imagine what the previous own got for it on trade.

A car is not even a depreciating asset, it's a flat out liability. If you're concerned about the rate of depreciation, you've got to choose accordingly. There is little demand for thirsty V8s right now and that impacts the value of your car. Just be glad you don't own an Excursion.

Absolutely true. When I traded my 2002 Land Rover Discovery in for my 2005 S4 Avant, the dealer just laughed at me And to think, I paid 27K for the Rover used ( lightly) in 02, but I loved that thing and the enjoyment I got from it was worth the cost. You gotta pay to play

I feel bad for you guys who purchased your v8's new. Well really i envy you for being able to afford it, but on the other hand the resale does suck bad for our cars in particular. Im not to concerned i paid $30k for mines with 15k on the odometer. I imagine in 2-3 years if i want to i will be able to get at least $23-$25,000 for it although it sounds to good to be true.

    Re: S4 Resale

If you guys haven't noticed, Audis depreciate really fast in the first 3 years. Moreso than Lexus, BMW, or MB. Within 3 years you see nearly a 40% depreciation from MSRP to mid-KBB value. (KBB retail is overpriced, KBB trade in is low balling)

Audi's are not as sought after as the other luxury brands, so their preowned values drop. Add to the fact that the gas guzzling V8 is hurting it now, plus the introduction of the B8 makes the B7 and moreso B6s even less desireable.

That's why I just buy preowned. There are usually a lot of decent options on the used market, and it really isn't worth paying $10-20 grand more to have virtually the same car, just brand new. There really is no reason to buy new over a well maintained good condition used car, unless you have money to blow and truely need a specific color/option that may be hard to find. I've bought a new car before...but see very little reason to ever do it again.

    Re: S4 Resale

While I'm in no way whatsoever thinking about trading in my S4, I'd still like to know what it's currently worth. But KBB, Edmunds, and NADA won't give me any info on it cause it's still so new. I'm pretty sure it's still worth more than I owe and I could probably trade it for brand new RS4 and have the same payments as now.

sorry, you're right. i didn't realize you were going for a trade in. unless the dealer is willing to hook you up big time on a new car purchase if you go through with a trade-in, i would look into selling it privately. remember it's a buyer's market, so if you're selling your car and you can't get a good price, that means you're going to get a good price when you are the one buying your next car

Because, at the time (Nov. 07), I couldn't find ANY local dealers with an RS4 on the lot. I was told by a couple dealers that they are special order only. I didn't want to wait. If I ordered one, I probably still wouldn't have it, or maybe it would have even been cancelled. Now I know of a few available.
