    Cold Air Intake

I got a 2004 1.8T, with an AFE Cold Air Intake. I have heard rumors that the stock Audi intake performs better than most after-market intakes. Is that true? What is the best after-market intake for Audi's?

basically true. the others are just over priced and look pretty. during the cooler months you can put a filter on the stock tip and itll sound cool....

    Re: Cold Air Intake

an aftermarket intake, especially on a turbo'd car, won't give it anything more really than the stock intake already has to provide, most people do it for looks on the 1.8t, and if your looking for looks, then def. get the Carbonio, imo...the afe looks like crap, even though its the best sounding intake i have ever owned when i had it on my e36 bmw.

    Re: Cold Air Intake

zdarova zemelya!.. if u have an AFE stage 2 and it works good - keep it... it will not perform worse than a stock box IF you have a decent heat shield... i bet it sounds a lot better than stock no?..

but if u have ur doubts and some money in the bank - sell it and get a carbonio... its like a stock intake, but upside down... works just as good, but sounds way better.... most people claim to have gains too..

good luck :) glad to see someone else get out of Lukashenko's f-ed up world;)

Yeah after much reading I don't think the aftermarket intakes do much over stock... I saw audikid66's boosted tech and it looks nice, the carbonio looks sweet as well but I think more carbon fiber covers complements it better, I have the EVOMs and I like the open filter look and sound... it's all basically your preferance IMHO..

    Re: Cold Air Intake

I like the Carbonio, and with larger MAF of my kit it works great. I have extra reflective heat shield all over it, but my IAT when combined with the FMIC are ideal. I can put my hand on the cover after running hard and it is no warmer than the outside of the car.
It wasn't like that before I added all kinds of heat reflector, though. You couldn't touch it without burning yourself then. So much for "cold" air, lol.
Don't ever pay the retail price for it, though.

The AFE Stage 2 is what I have and it sounds great. But apperantly it's leaking through a "groumet". That what the Audi mechanic said at the dealership and thats why check engine light is on. I'm thinking about getting a new one.

So should I just get that grommet or should I go back to the stock intake?

I don't even know if that AFE does shit for my car. Except makes it sound a little better.

It does nothing more for your car than a K&N drop in filter would. I took mine off after a week of having it for a few reasons. I still use the heat shield after I modded a little so it fit better.

same here. boosted tech takes away that engine cludder. Also, my favorite part about it is that you can hear the turbo spool so much more than with the stock airbox, and also it provides a blow off sound, even though it is acting with the diverter valve

    Re: Cold Air Intake

I would recommend using an AFE drop in filter panel. K&N tends to be over oiled and can ruin the MAF.

    Re: Cold Air Intake

In my opinion the stock airbox works great. I would only get an intake if I had enough work under my hood to justify it. I don't see the point in running a "cold" air intake with everything else stock.

    Re: Cold Air Intake

I'd have to agree. Just using a drop in filter works well for the car. Carbonio is too overpriced for what it is, your basically paying for looks. I just did a drop-in filter from AWE and still get the same spool-up sound. =)

ITG panel filter + Swiss cheese airbox mod FTW!!!!

The sound increase, while modest, is enough and justifies not getting one of these aftermarket hot air intakes IMO.

Careful when making the holes though, the plastic is brittle so use a sharp disk on your dremel or whatever. And take your time.

    Re: Cold Air Intake

The only thing any aftermarket air intake will get you is looks and sound. From a performance viewpoint, nobody's really doing anything significantly better than the stock OEM airbox w/ the stock OEM air filter.

To know if an intake is really better than OEM, you need to log air flow and temperature to know for sure. From being on this forum for many years, only the Carbonio v2 has shown a slight increase in air flow, but no real difference in air temperature.

I'm sure the extra heat shielding work Lee has done, may prove better resistance to heatsoak.

I remember Drew (DLSJ5) had a good DIY setup routed down to the fog grille, to suck cold air. I’d be worried on rainy days, but I’m sure that setup had to perform better than stock.
