Gapping sparkplugs on stock car to a chipped car w/o chip

Basically, I know we have a stock a4 sparkplug gapped to .032, while chipped cars are supposed to be 0.28. My car is stock, and I was wondering what would happen if I replace my sparkplugs with those gapped to .028. Would it change performance in any way, or possibly fuel economy?

My car runs a little more smooth at .028 than .032...

I think they vary a little bit. Mine always ran better with a .032 gap than .028. I've since switched to multi-electrode plugs and don't have to worry about gapping anymore.
