I used this DIY to do the OEM mute button/LED alert: http://www.audiworld.com/tech/elec156.shtml . The only difference is that since the DIY is for an A3, you will use a different button since the dash is different. I used part number 8E0 035 775 D 5PR which is a blank faced version of the 'FUNK' radio button seen elsewhere. You will also need the terminal plug, part number 4D0 971 636 B and two repair wires, Part Number 000 979 009 to make a harness that will plug into the back of the mute button. Obviously, the part number for the mute button will be different depending on if you want it with the chrome strip or the black strip. I don't have the part number for the blank face switch with the black strip, but I have ETKA and can get it if anyone needs it. My local dealer said he was unable to order this button since it was not in his system, so you may have to order it from OEMpl.us or VAG Parts. Also, inside the mute button DIY there is a link to an article on how to change the LED inside the button from green to red, but I chose to leave mine green so it would be more noticeable against the red dash lights, but you can do as you please. Hope this helps.
