04 V6 A4 Gas issues

I have a 2004 A4 3.0 Quattro, Automatic with 26k miles on it. I usually fill it up with 16 1/2 to 17 gallons but only get 255-280 miles per tank. Somethings wrong here with my math because this averages out to 16 mpg which is terrible! Is there something wrong with my engine? Has anyone else had this problem?

if you do a lot of city driving, then you will get that.
I get 23-25mpg from all highway, very few miles in the city.

I get around 25 on highway, no traffic, max of 28 of very careful mpg control. in the city I get anywhere from 11 to 18.

So what I'm getting here is that my gas mpg is normal?

yes
just learn to deal with this. you dont have much power but you are sucking down a lot of gas for "no reason".

Wow I would def take a better look into that... I drive freeway and city and I average out to about... ehh.. 21mpg, and I live on a hill! I am 17 so I do at times push the petal to the floor for some "quick" power, and I still average 19-23MPG... I dunno about your car, but is/are the service up to date?? I keep mine tip-top, and I use Premium Unleaded ALWAYS.. Otherwise I get the MPG your getting cuz the 3.0 V6 cant stand the Regular stuff, it wants it out of its system ASAP...

Oh by the way... Mine too is a 2004 A4 with the 3.0L V6, no quattro... It, like yours, has the CVT auto tranny.. And has 60k... I get about 311 miles per tank and still the computer thing says 30Miles til empty

I drive 90% city and get 15mpg on average....and my car just barely hit 50K....

quattro and non quattro make a big difference especially in the city. OP's car is quattro.

Really.. No way.. I knew Quattro eats tires up like a crazy, but I didn't know it effects your MPG too.. Im so happy I got this one vs. the one next to it at the dealer that was quattro

quattro can consume up to 10% more fuel than non-quattro model

Yep, 4WD/AWD almost always get worse MPG vs FWD or RWD.

don't feel bad my bimmer is rwd automatic and its only getting 15-16mpg :) my much smaller 1.8T gets 19mpg; whats the point of having a car with power if don't use it :)

Get some cougars to fill your tank, and vice versa.

I get about 310 before the gas light comes on (only tried twice lol).

Averaged about 21 MPG over 1500 miles or so here in the Silicon Valley for the last 2 month. Going mostly short trips in the city. Quattro Manual and 91 Octan. On the highway I'm able to get up to 27-28 when crusing at 75-80MPH.
With the manual you realize how much gas you waste with a automatic when not let the car roll to a red light. If I also stop in the last minute before the light the MPG goes down to 15-16 for my 5 mile trip to work. If rolling to the light I'm at 20-21 MPG. However I agree 15-16 MPG is more fun.

yeah this generation audi doesn't use regenerative braking of any sort. too bad. next gen b9 should get much better mpg :)
