    Running no exhaust-safe?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Alright, I got a question. How safe is it to run with no exhaust for about 100-150 miles? By no exhaust I mean my cat only, no downpipe ect... Only reason I ask is I am in between swapping exhausts and really have no other alternative. Will this give me major problems or will it be safe to do for my drive from New York back to jersey?

    Re: Running no exhaust-safe?

That is going to be one loud annoying drive, but not sure how safe it would be since all the fumes and heat will be right under the engine and cabin.

    Re: Running no exhaust-safe?

I drove with HFC and 2.5" DP while the DP wasn't braced and it was loud as **** and vibrated. Vibrations came from the lack of DP support. To make it easy, cruise at one speed and don't accelerate as it gets really loud.

    Re: Running no exhaust-safe?

I ran mine for 35-40 miles when my cat broke off at the down pipe. Loud as all heck and you could def smell the exhaust. You could go NASCAR old school and drive with a wet wash cloth in your mouth like Richard Petty used to. It is kind of cool to really hear your turbo spool up though. Just go easy on the throttle and you shouldn't attract too much attention.

Haha damn true. Today I ran my car with only the test-pipe from the turbo no exhaust at all and I burnt some wires to a crisp. No extinguisher in sight, I had to hose the hell out of the undercarriage and the wires next to the pipe. Now I know my next investment. It was very fun to run it tho, once you let off of the throttle the car is fairly silent but when you WOT holy shit is it loud.

Can't be much louder than when I had long tube headers on my Neon... 2.4L with high compression and cams... Long tube headers for about 45 miles was a mistake... There is NOTHING to quiet it down, like a turbo...

    Re: Running no exhaust-safe?

haha what?? ^^ after pulling my old exhaust off in a parking lot to sell it i drove home. surprisingly, i really didnt find it to be that loud. Driving home on the parkway with the windows down it sounded normal, a little more cabin noise but honestly not to much. It was definitely loud in tunnels though, almost kinda deafening next to the wall when I got on it haha

It's loud, but not unbearable. My friend with a 1G DSM ran open DP for 3-4 months. I actually liked riding in it. You could hear the stock turbo from a mile away.

I ran mine for a few days with a 3" test pipe and 2.5" downpipe... thats all. Sounded awesome because the turbo was wicked loud. When it spooled up it sounded like one of those big ass turbo diesel trucks! Vibrations got annoying but everything was fine.

It will seem extrasuperduperfast because it will be louder, well you might actually gain 10hp or so, and you mighty get better mpg/not sure though depends on your 02 sensors.but just on the highway as quickly as possible so you dont get ppulled over
