Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
i have a bunch of sap on my windows and the body. i tried the nail polish method on my windshield and it worked great. But im scared to use it on the body. Anyone have any suggestions? like which brand bug and tar remover worked best for you? or any other safe methods?

o, yea the nail polish remover thats in my house is with acetone, so definitely not using it on the paint. so i might go buy a non-acetone nail polish remover and give it a shot, but would still feel safer using something meant for this situation. I used the Invisible glass stuff...didnt really do the trick, neither did windex.

Re: Nail Polish Remover to get rid of tree sap?

Bug off. You can get it at automotive stores, made for this very purpose. Note that it will strip your wax off as well so you have to wax the portion afterwards. Used in many many times and never had a problem.

Re: Nail Polish Remover to get rid of tree sap?

I know this sounds crazy, but isopropyl rubbing alcohol worlks wonders! I know from personal experience. My wife parked her X5 under a tree for 2 days and came home with sap all over it. I reasearched this same topic on a BMW forum and a few people were really recommending the alcohol. They stressed "isopropyl" rubbing alcohol. I gave it a try after the hot water and soap treatment didn't work and the alcohol worked absolutely perfect. It is ony about $0.99 at a drug store and will work for you wihthout harming the paint. Give it a shot and you will not be dissapointed. Don't waste your time with the clay bar or any of the other expensive solvents. Just pour a little on the dropping then put a little on a cloth and let it sit on the sap for about 30 secords or so. It will come right off.

Yeah, just whatever you do, DON'T use standard ethanol alcohol. Rubbing alcohol has been diluted to 70/80%. Full ethanol will burn through paint and varnish *instantly*.

clay bar x 2. The rest of your car's exterior will thank you.
I had an employee who's jealous girlfriend put nail polish remover on his car after seeing another girl sit on his lap... after the $500 comprehensive deductible for the body shop to repaint his trunk, the car looks great.

I wouldn't go any farther than tar & bug remover. Use a product for what it's for, I say. Nail polish remover is for removing polish from nails, and 4D40 is for rusty bike chains.

Re: Nail Polish Remover to get rid of tree sap?

thanks for all ur input. I went out and bought a bug and tar remover made by STONER (same company as INVISIBLE GLASS), the directions said to leave it on for 60 sec. but i couldnt wait and gave it a try after like 5 sec, and wiped off with no effort. it was only $5 too. I really recommend it, probably works great on tar also, i didnt have any tar on at the time but by the way it dealt with sap im sure it will work just as great.
    again, thanks for your help!

Clay Bar is probably the least aggressive out of all these option. If a clay bar isn't strong enough, which in most cases it will be, then use soak it in some automotive tar remover and then clay.

I second this. I spent a weekend under some pine trees, and when I got back home I couldn't get it off... bug & tar remover did nothing. But rubbing alcohol took care of it quite nicely.

I have taken my car to those "self-wash" places and used the degreaser setting and sprayed the car with it, let it sit for 10 minutes, and used the high pressure soap to rinse off the degreaser. It worked wonders - my car is white and shows everything.

Re: Nail Polish Remover to get rid of tree sap?

what i use in my detail shop to get rid of tree sap is 70% rubbing alcohol.
its safe, cheap and takes the sap right off without discoloring the finish or ruining the clear coat.
just make sure you follow up with a good coat of wax because it takes the wax off too.
