    Lubricating my sunroof track?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    What is a good lubricant.

I don't want to use something to liquidy and runny.

Anyone have any suggestions. In the maintance it says to inspect, clean and lubricate sunroof track.

It's summer now and I'm using my sunroof pretty much daily so I figured it would be good to clean up and lube the track but I don't know what which lube would be good for it.

I have sprayed White lithium grease in there before and it definetly worked.

But the proper way to do it would be to, probbaly, remove the headliner and remove all the built up grease from over the years

    Re: Lubricating my sunroof track?

what is the process of doing this? It is apart of the 60K check up, right? Mine runs out of lubricant towards the end of it's path to being open. I think the dealer forgot to lube it during that check up.

    DIY out there?

CO AVANT, do you think non-synthetic white lithium will be bad ? That's what I did, and I wouldn't want to ruin my sunroof. At least it's not creaking anymore now.

I believe White lithium sythetic grease is what the dealer uses but if I remember correctly its like $30 for a small tube

I think I used 3in1 oil/lube last time. it's kinda watery but it lasted all last summer. It's time for me to lube up again so I'm curious as well to see what works best.

You will not have a problem. It actually helps prevent rust and corrosion.

Really? I went to a huge schmucks and they were like, "WTF is that?" so I laughed and gave up on my search figuring it was something only the stealership sold. I guess I'll keep looking, which store did you find it at by the way?

Can you just put it in the tracks and open and close the roof a few times or is it mechanical that need lube?

That's usually what I do. Easy to spot the "wear/rub" marks on the track. I wipe the old gritty gunk out before reapplying the grease. I also lube up all hinges I can access. If you use spray lube/grease be cautious of the sunroof being open. Easy for over spray to coat the interior. It's also a good time to check the drains for debris and proper function.

Has anyone thought about using BMW sunroof lubricant? Smaller tube but much cheaper.

Any differences between that and the OEM VW/Audi verison?

I just called Rose City Sunroofs here in Portland, OR and the guy said they use "Super Lube" to grease/lube all sunroofs.

Any synthetic (non-petroleum based) grease will do. Otherwise the polymers in the track will be attacked and soften. The PTFE grease above is a great product to use, it's Teflon-based.

The Audi grease would be great to apply bodily before paying for it.

It's only 6 screws to remove the sunroof glass panel and it will give you plenty of space to clean the tracks and lube them
