    Re: 05 s4 mods?

Channa's advice is, as always, spot on.

Specifically, the question of "chipping" is an interesting one. Some claim miraculous results... others claim gains are minimal at best?

In about 10 days, depending on my surgical schedule, I am going to have some empirical numbers for the unitronic software in my '05 S4. 034 Motorsports in doing the install, with pre & post dyno runs, I will post the numbers.

In the bay area we have some excellent choices to name few:

North Bay you have Stasis Engineering

South-East Bay you have 034 Motorsports

    Peninsula you have Streetwerke

    Re: 05 s4 mods?

i am on the skeptical side of this whole performance thing. a lil searching for posts by me will find out some results as far as how a stock S4 compares to a modded one as far as real world gains.

however i do believe them to enhance the driving experience...and obviously my friends s4 showed dyno gains of 15-25awhp over me...he isn't faster than me on the street. which is what i look for...for him...he is happy with his driving experience. he has sways front and back. H&R CO's. custom tune, DPs, and FI catback on some B6/B7 RS4 reps. he loves the way his car drives. and its fine for him....i want results if i spend the money and i don't mean what a dyno tells me.

welcome and good luck with your decisions.

Chippin as a whole, is not as excited for NA engines as it is on forced induction applications across all platforms. However, as stated above, with the 4.2 some claim a decent result and some claim pratically no gain, in either case.. I feel it's not worth the $500 bucks.

b00st - I have read all your posts regarding the trials you did. I have to say thanks for the heads up! I was going to put all this money into my car until I read that. However, if you are looking for a way to connect yourself to your car, get an exhaust and some sways. Maybe even a set of Ohlins SLs.

The way I look at it is this. Don't do anything you'll regret in a few months. And don't skimp on anything. Your car costs $55K sticker when it was brand new. Don't just slap whatever is cheap in there. Even if that means waiting a while to do the mod. Do it right the first time, and you won't have to/want to change it later.

Depending on the Reps he is running, the added weight could kill any performance advantages of 25hp. I had a set of RS6 Reps on my 01 A6 2.7T which made the car noticably slower off the line.

IMHO almost everything is relative...value is in the eye of the beholder.

If something makes you happy & doesn't adversely impact anyone...roll with it!

I would be very happy with spending $500 for 25hp & no Tq loss.

    Peace

chips only claim 10CHP on our NA motors. i'd be happy if i got that. but as shown on the dyno...its not the case.

agreed...but he's only running 18s. NOT 19s or 20s. so i don't think there is any disadvantage there. i don't believe the RS4 18" reps weigh any more or less than the stock 18" AVUS.

    thanks.

i have thought about doing the sways myself. at this point i like my ride the way it is. so no COs for me. i'm happy with the car stock. my A4 was a pretty brutal ride in my opinion...so i'm happy not to have that. the s4 is a little tamer...i'm not bouncing my head off the ceiling like in my A4. others wanted me to go even firmer...i just couldn't see it.

my car is 55k stock and i'm not about cheaping out. what I am about is...actual performance gains. i won't slap a 1300 milltek exhaust on for sound. my brother has the res milltek. it sounds good for him but i would need more. since my other passion is home theater i could better spend 1300 in there some where. i have an addiction to plasma tvs too...so right now...i'm just enjoying my s4 and viewing life in high definition. my blu-ray movie buying is getting out of control.

any mod i put on will be well thought out and enhance what i want. with my A4 i never cut costs and would never do it on the S. if something broke i replaced it with the best piece money could buy. for me...i am all about increased street performance. if i don't see it...i don't buy it. the only mod i am doing is the ECS snub that i have sitting on my desk and when the brakes need changing i will debate on what route i want. STOPTECH from awe or just some better pads and rotors. i'm on the fence.

i'm a firm believer in....doing it right the first time. so waiting and buying that quality part is always my answer and that goes for anything not just car parts.

Good advice. I'll remember this the next time I want to get something cheaper cause I can't wait to save for the better product.

    BOOST:

I tend to agree with your philosophy.

However, I wanted to try unitronic's software because it claims about 25hp with a slight increase in TQ across the curve & comes with a 30 day guarantee.

I'm having 034 Motorsports do the work with a before and after dyno. The numbers will speak for them self...if they don't produce I'll go back to stock & get a refund immediately. If that is the case I'm only out my time & a $100 for dyno time; which is cool 'cause I'm the curious type.

Otherwise, all I'm doing is having Stasis install Ohlins Motorsports in a couple of months.

    Re: 05 s4 mods?

Yakendo, I was curious if you ever got the "before and after" dynosheets when you had your S4 "reflashed" with the Unitronic chip/software. Did you get the claimed 21hp/17tq, and if so, was the gain on 91 octane gas or some mixture to get above 91 octane? Thanks.

Do you still recommend buying the $500 Unitronic chip/reflash?

The stock Rim and tire weigh 55lbs. Yours may weigh 1-3 lbs more or less depending on your tire

As for chipping the car. Well that is the on going debate.

The shop that installs your chip is not always going to be the best option for you to get a fair reading. Keep in mind the shop that is installing the chip makes money on the chip. so they have a vested interest in you being happy with the results. Getting a before and after is a good Idea

That being said 034 is a pretty solid shop if you do get the chip please share the before and after.

Save all your money for an exhaust, will change your look on the car, feel like a whole new car.

Then save all your money, make children, sell them, then buy a supercharger.

    Have fun Good Luck sir.

Definitely a big second on this. The only thing I would say to do different is. Don't sell the children. Start your own sweat shop and milk it for years. Possibly leasing them out to the circus for a short time...then get the supercharger
