so my car died when i was about 40 miles from my house... the check engine light flashed about 5 times as the rpm started to rise and my mph dropped.. i tried the gas a couple times before i pulled over... wen i came to a stop it died and now it doesnt turn on at all anymore. i really wanna refuse to believe this is a tranny problem... has anyone experienced something similar??

and any suggestions on what i should do or how i should go about it..

Did you have brakes before it died, if you had a hard pedal check the suction pump and check valve on back of engine by intake mani and firewall... could be a bad vacuum leak.

Yeah mine broke a week ago.. it will be completly obvious.. it ran like crap, wouldn't idle with out giving it gas and I got a CEL, that cleared after I drove for a few miles after the repair..

Try and jump it to see if it turns on, if it does then its your battery/alternator.

it could be your throttle body - did the epc come on and it began running rough before it died?

    Re: so my car died

What year is this car? When you say it died is it electrical (nothing turns on) or mechanical (car turns over but won't start). You need to give some more information on the problem before you can get an accurate solution instead of just guesses.

so it was the timing belt... my dads friend checked it out for me.. and btw the car didnt turn on mechanically.. electronically it was good. but now my question is what is the price range for something like this.. i just got quoted 800 by ma best friends dad ( a mechanic).. this is with a discount...

    Re: so my car died

How did they figure out it was the timing belt? How many miles on your car? If your belt broke at speed you would know it. My first guess was fuel pump.

    Re: so my car died

If your timing belt went as you were driving then you will be paying more than 800. if you were replacing the belt and only the belt then 800 is a very resonable price but the damage that is caused by a snapped timming belt pretty much calculates to a blown engine. i would double check and make sure that it is a timing belt issue, and not a simple vacume line issue, it's the difference between a new engine or a few simple items
Just keeping up with the rest of them...

find a perfectly good motor from a wrecked car. They're out there. Do some searching. You might try here: 800.624.3876

    Re: so my car died

If you go with the engine from the dealer, you will get some sort of warranty, if you go to a junk yard and get an engine there, audi will more thanlikely not give the engine a warranty. In my opinion I would spend the extra money and get the warrantied engine from Audi.

contact doug -- his name on here is dougyfresh. He'll give you a good price on a more or less complete motor, then you just need to hunt down a couple misc. parts. I'll shoot him a PM and tell him to get ahold of you
