Just bought an Ibis White RS4

Hello everone. I just bought a 08 Ibis White RS4 on Saturday. This is my first Audi and I love it. The RS4 is an amazing machine. I would like to learn more about it and hopefully I can get advices and tips from the members. I know this thread is worthless without pics. How can I post pics? Thanks.

Host them on photobucket and get the direct links to paste into your post

Are you experiencing any jerkiness between 1st to 2nd gear shifting?

Re: Just bought an Ibis White RS4

You must upload/host them on the web first, to your Audizine Gallery or a site like PhotoBucket as explained above.

Then simply copy and paste the image path (URL of the pic) into a post. Use the pic icon/button above (IE: ) to make it ultra easy.

    Also, congrats and welcome.

Coming from a Honda S2000 the RS4 definitely can't shift as smooth as the S. For some reason going into 3rd and 4th is smooth but I 1st and 2nd I feel that there's some jerkiness. I am driving like a grandma going 1st to avoid the jerkiness

I think some of that might be attributed to the S2000's lack of torque. But there's no getting around the fact that Audi's manual transmissions can be jerky.

Likewise, I shift from 1st to 2nd at 2500 rpm and delicately too. I don't think this is how the RS4 is meant to be driven, is it?

In another thread on this shift jerkiness, someone suggested that the jerkiness is caused by allowing rpms to drop too much between 1st and 2nd gear shifting, so I'm going to see if shifting faster and more aggressively between 1st and 2nd is going to help

Okay, won't slam it (i.e. pop the clutch on 2nd)

So this is a known Audi clutch characteristic?

I use this from the bentley website. Going to do my 60k miles service myself this weekend, and I already got all the tools.

Re: Just bought an Ibis White RS4

Congrats on the purchase fellow ziner... white is by far my fav . As far as the jerkiness, i experienced the same thing in my S4 although maybe im comparing apples to oranges. I over came it with experience and nothing more, its all about clutch control. At this point the shifts feel as crisp as my torqueless acura RSX type S.

Re: Just bought an Ibis White RS4

clutch control? Please elaborate. I'm dying to find out how to get a smooth 1-2 shift.

And yes, I've checked, this problem seems to be prevalent in S4s and RS4s, and I think some A4s suffer from it as well.

Re: Just bought an Ibis White RS4

Very nice car, Bob! Can't wait to see more pictures. I've read in other threads that an upgraded snub mount (engine mount) helps the shifting issue. I'm on my first Audi as well, so I'm doing more research on which snub helps the most and then looking for a local shop that has experience with this job before I make the swap.

    Cheers,

Re: Just bought an Ibis White RS4

bob, one of the things you'd want to look out for in the RS4 -- common characteristics:

    1. watch the clutch. some people have been known to kill the clutch in 5000 miles. I was told the car comes stock with a twin plate clutch.

    2. DRC -- check the shocks regularly (every 5000 miles?) for leaks. If they are leaking, good chance you have a DRC problem and you can get it replaced under warranty (I think)

    3. engine oil -- seems the V8 is known to consume quite a bit of oil, especially if you like to play around with high rpms. I stock 2 litres of engine oil at home just in case I need some, and if I head out on a road trip, I bring a litre along. It's probably good practice to check your oil level every 5,000 miles as well.

Some people have told me that Sport mode changes throttle response and engine characteristics, opens valves in the exhaust for better flow and exhaust note, and that the stock suspension firms up a bit. I have not been able to find any reference to the last item in the owners manual -- can anyone confirm this?

Re: Just bought an Ibis White RS4

Great car!!! Does it have the titanium package? I have found that shifting at around 3500rpm minizes the jerky transition from 1st to 2nd. Many have also reported improvements with the snub mount upgrade.

I don't think that it has the titanium package. window trim looks blacked out but that's about it.

My RS4 doesn't have the titanium packagage because I didn't like the Piano black interior. I like the carbon fiber trim better

Thanks for the advice. What kind of oil should I use? Does the manual tells you how to add oil to the engine?
