    vinyl wraped roof

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I vinyl wrapped my roof today all by my lonesome in my garage. It was a great learning experience and for my first time I don't think it turned out half bad. I will however be redoing it because there are some minor blemishes that I can't live with. I do like the overall look though and can't wait to try it again preferably with an extra set of hands. tell me what you think btw I have never laid vinyl down anywhere near this big and it was quite a challenge.

    Re: vinyl wraped roof

I got the vinyl from a local guy in town for a great deal. It was kind of a Pain in the ass to do by myself because it was such a big piece to work with. There is no seams at all but there is a couple of spots where a little dirt got underneath the vinyl and one small wrinkle. That's why I'm gonna redo it with the help of a friend. Hopefully it will be done next week. You really need to make sure everything is really wet. I used a solution mixture for doing window tint and mixed it with bottled water to help save the paint. I'll put more pics up when I redo it and maybe do a diy.

Oh, thank God... When I saw the title of the thread, I thought you installed a landau top. Yours looks much better... Did you take the shark fin off or just work around it?

I'd be willing to bet that if you really looked around you might be able to find a similar deal. If you can't let me know and I will ask him for you. I'm sure shipping costs would increase the price a little.

That other guy was selling this stuff for $250.[O_O] He must be outta his mind. So how does this stuff hold up over time? The paint will probably be a little different once you remove it in the future I would assume. Hopefully not noticeable enough to affect resale, even though in a few years our cars won't be worth too much anyway.

the fin wasn't hard. You just need to remove the dome light in the rear of the car and then there is a nut that needs to be removed once that is removed the fin pops right up. I didn't unplug it though. I made a template that was a bit smaller than the actual antenna but large enough for it to fet through. then just layed the antenna back on top. I am going to redo it because there are some blemishes that I don;t like. If you guys want I will write up a diy when I redo it.

everywhere I looked wanted an arm and a leg for this and that didn't even include the install. That's why I took it upon myself to figure this out. Also now I can help my crew out when they want their stuff done. Soon as I get some more vinyl I'll write the Diy and stuff for you.

It's a solid black with a high gloss. I don't think you would want to use anything opaque.

I was thinking about doing that too but wanted to master the roof first, you might want to make a template first to do the V part of the hood though. that way you don't have to cut it while on the hood and risk scratching your paint.

there was somebody on here that did some on a couple small parts of the car but I think if you did the whole roof it might look gaudy. Plus I think that if you are going to add carbon fiber to your car it should serve a purpose, like weight reduction. It shouldn't be a simple overlay that only serves cosmetic purposes. Just my opinion

Was it a single large piece of vinyl, or two longer pieces that you use?

Must have been fun trying to install that by yourself if it was one piece. I don't know how you managed to get it to go across the entire side if you did it by yourself! haha

believe it or not, it was one single piece of vinyl. I used alot of wet stuff that I made with tint solution and water and soaked the back of the vinyl as well as the top. Don't be afraid of that wet stuff, it's a life saver. After that all I can say was I moved fast and squeegeed the all the liquid out starting from the middle working my way out. I little thing I did to was to take a disposable blue shop towel and wet it a little and use that with the squeegee so the vinyl didn't get scracthed.

I've done it on M3s before, and I was just curious. Cause it was a pain doing it with another person helping me. I could only imagine how hard it was doing it by yourself.

I'm leaning towards the carbon fiber. I mean, I hate overlay, but this stuff looks decent, and I think on a roof it'll look decent because you don't see it really that close up.
