    Friend's car won't start

My friend's 2001 A6 2.7t has been making making a rattling sound for a few days in the engine bay. When he was on his way home, the rattling got louder and after a few minutes the engine shut off. Now he has been unable to start it so i pulled his codes to try and see what is wrong. These are the codes i came up with:
    P1347-Bank2,Crankshaft-/Camshaft os.Sens.Sign. Out of Sequence
    P0300-Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
    P0301-Cyl.1 Misfire Detected
    P0302-Cyl.2 Misfire Detected
    P0303-Cyl.3 Misfire Detected
    P1113-Bank1-Sensor1 Internal Resistance too High
    P0341-Camshaft Pos.Sensor Circ Range/Performance
I do a little work on my B6 A4 but don't know much about A6's or what codes mean. If you could help diagnose his problem i would really appreciate it.

    Re: Friend's car won't start

    This is a tricky one.

You need to test the cam position sensor on the front of the passenger side cylinder head first. If that is bad, replace it. If it isn't, the ECU is probably bad.

The P1347 is a generalized error code that says that multiple systems are not behaving.

If you ECU is bad, this would make sense. BUT, if the cam position sensor is bad, you could have ignition problems, and fuel system problems since it can't determine when to spray/fire.

So start with the cam position sensor first and then worry about the ECU.

Coil packs go easy on these cars, especially the older ones. Check them out.

    Re: Friend's car won't start

I was kinda thinking coil packs too cause i know they go out very easy on the 1.8t's but is it common for 3 to go out at the same time since he is having misfires in 3 different cylinders. Is there any way to check without buying new coil packs first?

Also how can i test the cam position sensor?

You have to look closer at the codes he posted:

    P0341 = Bank1 Cam Position Sensor (G40).
    P0301-Cyl.1 Misfire Detected (bank1)
    P0302-Cyl.2 Misfire Detected (bank1)
    P0303-Cyl.3 Misfire Detected (bank1)

All of these codes are directly related. If the CMP is off, the plugs will misfire on that bank. Bank1 is Cylinders 1-3. This also will prevent the car from running.

P0300-Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected is indicating that more than one cylinder is misfiring.

P1113 is not related and says that the bank 1 primary O2 sensor's heater was not operating properly. The car would still run this way.

P1347 is saying that Bank2's cam sensor is seeing an out of sequence situation. This is related to Bank1's bad CMP readings.
