Need help with an APR chip in my B5 A4

So I was going to pull out the ECU to get it chipped. I had always guessed that the car was chipped since the boost seems to be around 18psi give or take.

The car itself never really seemed "that" fast.. although I admit I have never really driven in another B5, only a newer turbo beetle (stock) And it seemed the same speed.

I took out the ECU and noticed fingerprints, so I took it apart. Low and behold there is what looks to be an ECMS from APR.

So I have a 98.5 B5 and I go to call up APR.

They weren't so helpful at APR in terms of figuring out how to activate it, or even if I had to or not. Their response was ship it, pay $100 or 150 I didn't catch it.. to register it and transfer the name... and then they'd tell me what is on it. Of course they warned me and talked to me as if my car would blow up with severe engine damage.. I've had the car already for 2 years! Oh well.

So I went to the car and tried to hold the cruise control "set" on the stalk and no ce light blinking.

Now I'm hoping that there is no switchable function and the ECU is indeed chipped as is. Is there any way to verify any of this at all?

Thanks so much for any input!

Your car doesn't have the ability to switch programs via the cruise control stalk.

If you see 18psi the car is most certainly chipped. If it weren't you'd never see more than 10psi.

B5 A4s with stock turbos are slow, even chipped. Unfortunately you'll need to get used to that or get a bigger turbo.

    Hope this helped.

    Follow the wire!

if your ECU has more than one program it will have a RCA style plug on the side of the ECU. If there is one there, then you have more than one program - follow the wire that is plugged in the side of the ECU and it should lead you to a momentary switch that should allow you to change to program. These can be mounted anywhere and are usually under the dash or steering column.

Thanks SOOO much for the info guys. Much more helpful than APR guys. I did ask them if the 98.5 would be able to switch it, he said it could and could not. I asked them if there needs to be an adapter, he said maybe maybe not.

    Really frustrating.

So in the end I guess it's running chipped the whole time. Sorry for being a speed snob, yes I'm used to a lot of turbo mitsus all being able to run from 11/12 seconds in the 1/4 mile . I am happy enough with the Audi, I've always liked the look, just not the price tag. :) I've had a few friends with nice S4's, and one with a crazy Audi 90.

Again, thanks so much for the info guys, I think that answers all my questions.

APR customer service is horrible. Its like talking to brick wall. I'm sure they were real assholes considering you didn't personally buy the chip from them. Def frustrating i know how you feel i went threw it with my exhaust.
