    Need advice on S4

I am interested in getting a B5 S4 or RS4 for use as a daily driver. Not sure what the differences are between the two, other than K04's and Ground Effects. I used to have a B7 S4 and sold it because of a lack of mod-ability. I loved the car from a luxury standpoint but with the two week bs about the SC I gave up after two years. I am the happy owner of a 996TT that traps 122 at 11.70 and a 60-130 of 8.4 all with stock k16's. However, driving the car around daily is becoming to much, setting of alarms, its loud, rough riding, and watching the odometer rack up the miles is disheartening.

Anyways, looking for advice on a path to take for getting a 01.5 or 02 S4. Not sure of what mods are nice to have, what are signs of abuse from PO, and what the reliablity factor is. I know trapping 11's is an outstanding acheivment in the S4 but am more interested in a car I can tweak a little, and still have a nice DD. I have searched the forum and looked thru pages of the B5 section for weeks, and haven't had much luck. I hope this hasn't been beaten to death, just looking for a little help from Technik Enthusiast's!!:P

Not sure if your talking about a b5 rs4, that would be pretty hard to get one over here...But as far as daily driving goes mine has been great. If your looking for a DD that will give you fun rides home from work, with performance/luxury/handling I say why not. As a daily driver, and assuming you dont want another loud car, just throw a chip in there and call it a day. If you can, find a 01.5 or 02 like you stated, they come with the updated MAF and a few other things.

What are some good mods to look for to come included with the car? Exhaust, ECU, Snub, LWFW and clutch? Are these cars reliable?

    Re: Need advice on S4

If I were you, I would look for an already-put-together Stage 3 B5 S4. They can be had now for under $20K, and should run you consistent -- yet reliable -- 11's all day long.

Reliability is a factor for any car with turbo's -- but the B5 S4 seemingly has a few more 'kinks' than your average car.

If you can do some wrench work yourself, then it's an easy task to keep the car running well.

My 02 S4 with 85K miles has given me no major problems at all.

A stage 3 is stiill very daily drivable -- and will still get over 20mpg if driven 'slowly'.

Or, you could opt for something like my car -- in the $15K range. Just a stage 1 or 2 (Stage 1: Chip, Stage 2: Chip + Exhaust) will run anywhere from Mid 13's (Stage 1) to Mid 12's (Stage 2+) and will be very daily driveable.

Most will tell you that the stock K03 turbo's on the car are it's weakest point.

A Stage 3 gives you upgraded turbo's (K04's) -- which are found on the RS4 stock.

However, a properly taken care of Stage 1 or Stage 2 S4 is a great (and cheaper) way to go -- but will be less reliable.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers~

Hey txgold, I'm geetee on 6speed. Nice looking turbo.
As for an S4, I donno about buying a modded one but this is what I would do.
Buy a unmodded S4(01.5-02) for under 13-14k (less than 100k miles).
Do regular maintenance such as timing belt etc.
Do a stage 3 (K04 turbo, fueling, DP, exhaust etc). Suspension.
There's many tuning options and IMO i'd go with VAST but thats up to you.
The whole setup should run less than 30k with a reliable (somewhat haha) DD that is capable of trapping 120+ full weight and is also quiet.

The B5 S4 is on Canada's exempt list for importing into country. It sucks, would love to import one for a second car.
