I want to do the independent foglight mod but i am not sure what he is talking about cutting in the diy on audiworld. Does anyone know of a write up with pictures. This would be for an 02 s4.

    Thanks

I would show you but my car is getting fixed up right now.

You take the black box out. Then you look at the multiple 'teeth' sticking out of the top. You 'chop' the 2 numbers completely off (i think 15 and 17, but don't quote me on that) and then solder the base of those chops of teeth onto number 12 with a wire (again don't quote me on the numbers).

Simple, and if you have a solder, takes 5 minutes tops.

yeah take the glove box out and the little side pannel. it is a major pain in the ass to get to, i used a long flathead to help me pry it out. once you get that out you'll see all the prongs on it. pretty straight forward from there with the DIY.

    Re: independent fog lights

ok so you chop of the prongs on the black box according to the diy. Then you solder a wire from the chopped points to the other according to the diy. Ok now i get it. I thought the entire thing was suppose to come out and all i could get out was the black box. Thanks for the clarification.

    Re: independent fog lights

i was reading the AW write up and was a bit confused because it seems like both the box and the peice it plugs into are suppose to come out and i couldn't make that happen. If you bothered to read my first post NY02s4 you would know that i was trying to follow the aw write up. With that said was your post necessary?

The black "box", ( its a relay), is sometimes very hard to remove. I had to pry mine up with a flat tip screwdriver.

Funny, mine was really easy to take out (maybe I have small girly hands?) but a big pita to put back in the harness.

Anyone with basic mechanical skills should be able to remove the relay box. It can be a huge PITA if you have big hands and or not used to working in those types of situations in a car.

make sure you go to the S4,A4 writeups and look for:

Ok. I am bringing this thread back to life. I need some info from anyone who has done this.

    I cut pins 12, 15 & 17. Soldered a wire from 14 to 15 to 17. Nothing, no fogs.

I probably need to do a better soldering job.

    Input please!!!

Okay, so you did an HID upgrade in your fog lights then did the independent fog light control mod, is that correct? If so, what kit did you use to upgrade the fogs to HID and how was the install? I'm considering this myself..

I've been thinking about this mod since the ktits were 400 on ebay. Now that they are 100 from legit sources.. I'm closer and closer every day.

used these guys, very cheap price but quality parts.

search HID fogs on the search button, there is a DIY and i used my own cottering pins and secured the bulb to the fog housing. Plug and play baby.

    Re: independent fog lights

you don't need to add the wire. You can just throw down a slab of solder connecting the three spots. It is a lot easier to remove the glove box holder to put the relay back in.

    Re: independent fog lights

yep, a glob of solder is all it took to get it right. The chip is so damn small any size wire seems too big to solder on.

    Glob it up

I like this mod because basically I have driving lights whenever i want, no need for headlights until its completely dark

    Re: independent fog lights

im going to revive this thread for the second time rather than making a new one.

My main concern is reliability since your essentially jumping the circuit, has anyone went back to their relay module and check on the circuit itself to find any signs of wear. Some people have told me that this might be quite dangerous by starting a fire.

After all the research I did, i still went about with the diy maybe due to a taste of desperation and lack of time, :).

I must say, this is my favorite diy mod so far.

    Any input is greatly appreciated.

Agreed this is one of the best DIY mods available. I did it about 2 weeks ago and no issues so far, and I haven't heard anyone having a problem with it either. So it seems to be safe...

Would be nice to get the rears independent too, for fake brake checks when people are tailgating, I used to do that all the time in my B7 A4 never failed and I laughed my ass off every time. Would be cool with the LED headlights to get those independent as well.

Well all you have to do is throw the front fogs on to get the rears to work. And you can do all that with the lights off so in a sense the rears are independent.

    Re: independent fog lights

I always have my front fogs on, so the rear fog is never a problem to switch on for me.

Anyone do this diy project a while back and have any expertise on this small concern?

I agree. It seems like there's a less messy way, probably cutting the wires coming from the foglight switch, or the wires directly from the relay.

    Re: independent fog lights

This is actually the least messiest way. You can easily replace the relay module or remove the wire. I'd much rather do this than tap into the hard wiring in the harness.

Besides, there hasn't been anyone to report a problem yet. I actually did the pure solder connection and I haven't had an issue.

This is what I'm doing. I''m going to splice the LED wires to the fog lights and make the fogs independent, and eventually either HID or LED to match the LED's in my headlights.
