    Motor drop for downpipe install??

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I am currently having a downpipe and catback installed in my B7 S4, and was told by my mechanic that per the instructions from Audi that the motor must be dropped 50 mm (I think) to get the OEM downpipes out. I have a tip and he said he cant fit the DPs by the transmission.

Anyone else get there's out without doing this? Its not that I think he's trying to stiff me with a huge bill, I just thought that people have gotten the DPs out without dropping the motor.

    TIA

dont know if its any different on the B7... but on my B6 the pipes went in pretty easily... didnt have to "drop the motor"

as far as I know, people get it done without dropping anything. I'd go elsewhere for this install, maybe someone that is local by your that's done this before.

Re: Motor drop for downpipe install??

TIP does NOT require any droppage at all. However you have to know that there are different downpipes for TIP and 6MT due to differing forms around the transmission tunnel.
Double-check that you have DP's that will fit TIP.
Besides that the mechaning just needs to have an 18" extender on his wrench and that is that.

Yeah they're for a tip, I checked on that one.

Thanks for the heads up, maybe he was able to get the pipes out, said he was going to try. Kinda sucks my labor charge is increasing as we speak.

I had DPs installed on my TIP and it required a drop of the sub frame. You must have TIP DPs as well.

Lowering the subframe is common on the S4 with Tip trans.

Re: Motor drop for downpipe install??

When I had mine done, the Tech said it was very tight but no problems. I do remember him saying that he felt like he couldn't tighten the bolts enough no matter how tight they were? Unrelated but thought I would share. Very happy and no problems to date, 9 mos.

Well I am happy that I am not the only one who had to do it this way. Makes me feel much better. Phew.

Thanks for calming my "sticker shock."

Re: Motor drop for downpipe install??

Just as a point of reference, I paid an Audi Tech $325 to do a Fullback Installation; DP's & Catback. He did it after hours @ the dealership where he works, which is where I bought my car. I guess they are allowed to work on Family cars after the shop closes, so I guess I'm his "cousin".

Re: Motor drop for downpipe install??

I took out my down pipes in my B7 S4 by myself in my garage. Took them to a welder and had him make me straight pipes matching the factory bends. Took them home and bolted them right up.
