Set a lap record @ Willow Springs Big track

Well more like a personal best!..On the 24th i clicked a 1:41.488 in the 4th and last session of the day..in our group lap times range mainly from about 1:36 to 1:48's..Porsche 911's,C6 Vettes,evo's..Z's..Mustangs..S2000..M3's..G35's..h ave yet to see a Mercedes! As some of you catz might know Im the lone Audi B7 representing in NASA So Ca monthly track events..great weather conditions for doughboy n me...mid-high 60's..I really woke up after I 180'd the car while trail-braking thru 5th corner in the 1st session,2nd lap..happened way too quick with no time to correct ...rear end just swung out right way too fast.. a combination of the track surface and tires being cold plus me not getting all my braking done in a straight line before my turn-in.. the really bad news that day was a really quick Mini Cooper S in my group..HPDE 3..during 3rd session went into infamous turn 9 way too hot and off the track..made Big mistake in trying to jump right back on....rolled numerous times across the width of the track and was ejected from the Mini.. i just caught the tail end of the accident..looked real bad..car was reduced to a crushed beer can..he was transported to the hospital by air ambulance..The driver, Joe Drey, 75 years young, died the following day ...Rest in peace Joe ..We're gonna miss you..

I'm curious on how you feel about the A4 as a capable track car vs. some of the others on that list. Is it Quattro? Manual Tranny I assume? It looks like you have alot of mods in it, which made the most difference?

Also what's the deal with tracking at Willow Springs? How does one go about driving a street car there?

Its a quattro and yes a 6speed..In terms of aftermarkets parts I would say both the suspension set-up ,R-compound tires, center diff all combined have allowed the car to really shine..I have to find every bit of grip, hit my apexes, modulate braking/throttle going into and coming out of corners to ultimately raise the exit speed..I will go with the 93 file for the first 2 sessions then switch to 100oct. file in last 2..when on the 100 file i'd say Im making roughly 275chp/310tq..the single single most effective thing to go faster is well..u guessed it..more track time! Sure someone can show up in a 400+hp Corvette or Porsche and pass you on the straightaway with ease but where I get 'em so many times is mid-turn n exiting corners..sometimes the case is too much car and not enough driver..specifically not enough track time..It feels pretty good when we have download sessions and other drivers are asking if the Audi is an S4..I stay tight-lipped and just point to my proud litl 2.0t badge!! lol..I consistantly equal or better the times of moderately modded 350Z..Porsche Boxers..Mustang GT's where the drivers also run with race tires..theres about 5-6 of us all within .5 seconds of one another on our days best lap time..after 2 years tracking with the same group of drivers u know whos fast and who isnt..At willow Springs I'd say im tracking at about 8/10ths by the 2nd session(4 total per day)..just enough to give me a decent cushion for error..keep in mind i track in HPDE class and NOT a race class..Lastly I just like the challenge of tracking a car that so many others think might not be or should not be all that track-worthy..done right the A4 2.0 is quite capable of suprising things on a roadcourse..peace

i'm trying to go soon, maybe july 12-13. a buddy of mine told me that redline is hosting this but sat is open to all cars as sun is for mazfest, so mazdas only. haven't gone since last dec. congrats on the time though. that's the one track i haven't done yet and would love too. pretty surprising what the lil a4 can do. any pics?

I was on that track the week before you. Out of curiosity, were you using a transponder for your lap times, or someone with a stopwatch? That seems a bit faster than some pretty experienced drivers in faster cars on the track when I was there.

I use a AMB transponder at all my track events..Believe me my times are legit..I have a copy of the actual download timesheet for that session..during the scorching summer months my times will drop off about 1.5 sec.. I can get the Audi over 115+mph in turn 8 in 4th gear winding at about 6k rpm..heel/toe down to 3rd before turn in into turn 9's decreasing radius..Im getting more confident in that turn than maybe some in our group..im learning to know my car limits.. hit my mark and track out with less than a foot to the edge.. then take her up to about 120mph straightaway..o when i get it right its magic!!..you should come out and run with us in NASA.. peace

Streets of Willow best lap: 1:32.362 on 91 oct.file..track was out of 100 oct. fuel..that course beats me up but i'm sure i can shave off close to another sec! You might find it interesting where i place among all other timed cars by going to Speed Ventures.com click Event Results for 5/11/08

Hey JB I stand corrected the time on my lap was 1:35@ WSIR here is the link lots of traffic i'm sure I could have gotten that time down more on a clear track. The 1:33 was on a different track, I just want to set the record straight.
