    Rattle Can Rims

I painted my old bent rim with a rattle can this past weekend and i really like the look of it, so im going to do all my wheels. All i did was clean the rim with some regular cleaner you would use to clean the rims regularly. and then i just for to spraying. I didnt sand or prime anything. And i did it with PlastiDip. I really like the color it came out to be because it is like a flat color, but it has some shine to it. What i would like to know is what should i do so i can paint all the rims. Sanding? Cleaners? Paints?

and btw, the rims are ASA AR1. not the stockers. Here is a pic of the rim i did this weekend.

I dont think it is a good idea to use plasti-dip.

IMO it won't hold up at all. It is way to easy to peel off.

    Re: Rattle Can Rims

Yeah thats what i figured. I did my grill with Plasti and it looks great, but thats a small area. So i should go down to the local autozone and get some automotive paint? or is there any specific paint?

    Re: Rattle Can Rims

After reading some tutorials I tried it on mine. First I sanded them. Than I used primer. Then painted over it with Rust-ez(sp?) Semi-Gloss black. Turned out very flat. Didn't care for it at all so I'm on the search for new rims.

BTW, without prepping it, the paint will eventually chip easy and possibly peel.

I painted mine with RustOleum. Haven't had any issues so far. At least as long as I don't throw shit at them anymore.

    I used the same shit.
Exactly how mine turned out, but on sport rims. Way to flat.

well, as seen in the above picture, I don't exactly care about my car getting dirty. I AutoX regularly, and these are my DD wheels.

Here's how they looked before I painted them.(A8/TT rotors too)

    ugh. misunderstanding i guess.

he said he painted them and didn't like the outcome. so he is searching for new rims.

and I said, "why not strip the paint off". as in, remove paint and start over.

    Re: Rattle Can Rims

btw, for the record, regarding plasti-dip - no amount of sanding will help that paint stick to the surface; especially a metal surface. That paint bonds to itself and relies on creating a continuous cover over the substrate. I've painted many things with the plasti-dip stuff and no matter how much prep work you do, you can always go back and peal the paint off like a rubber sticker... it just comes off... it does not adhere to the substrate.

having said that, you def. should sand any surface with a 320 or 400 grit sand paper before you paint with regular enamel or poly paints. Not only will it give the new paint something to bite into, it will also smooth out the substrate much more than a simple good cleaning with chemicals will do; the end result will show it.

Primer is a different story - not all paint job warrant using primer - especially those where the surface is a good continuous color and good condition prior to paint. iI you have a clean set of wheels with little or no damage to the existing paint and no raw metals exposed, a light scuff of that paint followed by your color of choice will suffice. Primer comes into play when you have exposed metals, plastics, etc. and you need the primer to bond itself to the substrate. Primer also helps cover up (in fewer coats) various color imperfections on the substrate giving you a nice clean slate to put your new color on.

    Re: Rattle Can Rims

it's up to you if you want to prime and clear it. or use adhesion promotor.

the BEST advise i can give someone, is to USE GOOD QUALITY PAINT!

btw, i had good results with that process minus the sanding and using primer.

if you sand well enough, you probably don't need primer. but it wouldn't hurt

rim paint from autozone got me this

i think they came out really well, im definately happy with them, they were originally black. i sanded, primed, painted, sanded, painted, sanded, painted, sanded (all sanding with like 400 grit) a crap load more times to build up the paint, and then did the same thing with clear and 1000grit i think i used. probably like 5 solid coats of paint, with a bunch of little coats in the middle, then atleast 4 heavy coats of clear.

^^^ if you wanted silver i would have traded you mine! lol

i figured black would be easiest because it is the darkest color. so it wont be as hard as say painting a black rim silver like you did.

How long did you wait after spraying a coat of paint to sand the wheel between the coats? Basically what I made bold in your post...
