i've had both. not a b7 a4, but currently i'm in a b6/fwd.
i can say, i do miss my quattro, but you'll hear a ton of people say here in socal w/o weather constraints where you can truly appreciate quattro like in other regions, it's a perk that's not a requirement.
that said, i loved my TT - i miss it everyday. while yes, there's not a strong modding market, i liked the fact that i was rare. in fact, i've noticed more so now being in a b6, that i hardly see any TT's @ a stoplight anymore. and the new one, well - seeing one on the road gives me a "girl boner" each time i see the little mini interpretation of an R8. TT's are classy, quick out of the box(can't speak for fwd/auto - i had 5spd/quattro pkg). A4's are elegant, but more suited towards that "sedan mentality". trust me, it's been an adjustment for me having four doors as i went from TT -> a4 cab -> b6 sedan.
if you want to go hard at modding, the A4 will give you the best fun. TT's are fairly limited in what you can do performance wise: intake, exhaust, chip maybe. it's most aesthetic: tint, front lips, wheels(more options as a 5x100 though!!), c/f interior goodies, etc.. but A4's, there's so much out there...
so i guess it depends on if you'll be satisfied with a TT lightly played with or an A4 you can mod the f*ck out of. check out your options as far as both(if you plan on modding at all)...can your lifestyle accept the limitations of a 2 door coupe vs. a four door car? do plan on having children anytime soon? marriage = family coming in from out of town, etc., do you commute(manual sucks in stop/go traffic)? if you're more selfish in nature, a TT will suit. You NEVER see anyone riding backseat in a Porsche, do you? no, just the bald white guy trying to compensate with his trophy piece riding shotgun...sorry, had to throw that in there. A4's you can cruise with your buddies(if you want) - you have more room. i didn't need it nor want anyone messing up my carpet, scuffing up my door cards and opted to drive solo so it worked for me.
TT pros- quick, very sporty(boost seemed more responsive(maybe due to size?)
- quattro handled like a dream
- not one at every stop sign
- better acoustics(kinda like the sound room @ circuit city - lol)
- more 5x100 wheel options
- sexy as hell: complimented all the time
TT cons- limited modding fun
- bad dv
- can't truly use backseat for passengers
- harder to find car audio installers to install your stuff
- went through tires a lot quicker
- FS: part out listings less common
- mods tend to be more expensive
- mods are a lot harder to sell off reap most of your money back like A4 goodies.
A4 pros- endless modding available; lots of support here
- part out's are more common =)
- more room(if you need it)
- 2.0 feels the way 1.8 SHOULD HAVE off the lot. I had more fun w/a loaner 2.0 fwd A3 than my own fx chipped A4.
- complimented, but it took stag. wheels & a c/f hood to get that!
A4 cons- everyone has one
- wasn't sporty-feeling until i went manual
in the end, i have a b6 now, love it! don't get me wrong - but i do miss my TT. and the diverter valve was topside, and readily easy to replace. =0) one girl's opinion. you should drive both (in the most rewarding options you want out of it) then decide. i knew on my test drive that TT blew more than smoke up my arse.
