Does anyone really understand the Tiptronic?

I love the A4, but the auto is very disappointing. It continues to do odd things at odd times. Lately I noticed something (else) I don't understand.

Highway in Drive - 3000 rpm and 80 mph, give it some gas and it goes to 3300 rpm while speed does not increase. So it looks like the torque converter is slipping. I put it in TIP mode and it doesn't do that, hard throttle and no increase in rpm. If I start in Drive, give it some gas, let it increase to 3300 rpm and without moving the throttle just push it over to Tip mode the rpm drops to 3000 again. If the torque converter can be locked in Tip mod why not in Drive? Is this normal? Why?

BTW: REVO stage 1 and DSP are turned off.

Re: Does anyone really understand the Tiptronic?

its fine as long as you realize the chiptuners are not addressing the tiptronic at all. stock its quite fine. k03/k04 chipped = no good.

it seems the BT guys get more fun since it can actually pull to shift (redline).

i put my car back to stock mode and the tiptronic is 10 times more driveable.

its really sad the tuners won't address this. to me; get a manual or drive it stock (or go BT)

whats odd is my bmw doesn't exhibit any of these traits when chipped. oh well.

I noticed that, but it will still have the long shift times.

So did I. I may turn it back on for long road trips however.

Do you turn your Revo on and off yourself or do you have a shop do it?

I picked up a switch on the classifieds. Takes about a minute to switch programs. No need to go back to the dealer as the original program is still in your ECU.

That is completely normal operation, so is the slight shake you feel at idle. Stop complaining all the time sheesh ;)

Sweet. Do you have it connected directly up to your ECU?

BTW, I have nearly the same car as you and am also VERY disappointed in the Tiptronic. A shop owner told me once about why it's so slow to respond but, it was so complicated that I don't really remember. Something about how something has to move through fluid to engage the gear whereas the manual doesn't have to do this.

I'm gonna tell you good things as well. While I've heard it's quite a bit better for the manual, chiping (or in Revo's case flashing) has probably given me more bang for my buck than anything I could do. IMO it is the foundation of any modded b6.

Re: Does anyone really understand the Tiptronic?

i use the cruise control button to switch to stock. not as cool as the b5 setup where you could switch while driving :) but convenient.

important in case you get some bad gas in bumfeq you need to be able to go back to the low (85-87) map so you don't frag your motor. the stock timing maps are capable of running on any gas sold in the usa which i believe the lowest tier is 85 octane in some parts like colorado.

You can switch between programs on the fly if you want with APR 1+. I do it all the time.

    Hmmm, I guess you're right.

APR - "WARNING! DO NOT ATTEMPT TO SWITCH PROGRAMS WHILE THE CAR IS IN MOTION! ALTHOUGH EMCS WILL ALLOW PROGRAM SWITCHING WHENEVER THE IGNITION IS ON, IT IS NOT RECOMMENDED TO SWITCH PROGRAMS UNLESS THE ENGINE IS OFF AND/OR THE CAR IS MOTIONLESS. ATTEMPTING TO SWITCH PROGRAMS WHILE DRIVING COULD BE DISTRACTING FOR THE DRIVER AND COULD RESULT IN AN ACCIDENT."

Re: Does anyone really understand the Tiptronic?

I remember when I had my B6 TIP I had something weird happen. For some reason I felt like abusing my car and kept smashing the gas pedal on and off in tip mode. Probably some where around 60mph - 80mph I would smash the pedal, off then right back on. After continuously doing that 4 or 5 times while I had my foot on the gas the RPM's shot up, loss of power and it was like I was in Neutral. It was enough to scare me so I stopped and let off the gas then it went back to normal and never happened again.
