    boost leak test

After reading the write up "finding a boost leak" on a4mods.com figured I'd give it a shot.

    http://a4mods.com/index.php?page=web...boostleak.html Thanks martini

    1) Inserted my pressure tester in the TIP.

2)disconnected the PCV return from the TIP (note: on my car the check valve was closer to the firewall. Not on the TIP like the write up followed)

3)I started to charge the system, and at 2~3 psi I started to hear a weird sound. Kind of like boiling cooking oil... hard to explain...
So I ended the test immediately.

The noise is similar to what you hear in the background ( 00:18-00:31)

Anyone know what that sound is and if it's normal or not?

    Re: boost leak test

I've done plenty of leak tests on Evos and I have never heard anything like that before. Can you tell where its coming from? Do you have a picture of the tester hooked up?

I think you may have disconnected the wrong hose... its probably oil bubbling from pressurizing the crank case

when you started it did it smoke out the exhaust?

double check that you disconnected the right thing on the TIP.... it shouldn't be in a different location if you are an AMB 1.8T

It sounds like oil bubbling, and no smoke out the exhaust.

what goes from the TIP to the back of the engine? No check valve on my TIP...onlt a tube with a braket bolted on the engine to what I tought was the check valve. I will take pics tomorrow.

this is the best picture I have.... you want to disconnect and plug the PCV somewhere in that path

    Re: boost leak test

Yup, that's what I did..except the pcv return valve is not directly on the TIP. A tube comes out from from the TIP (red line) and the valve is located in the top left corner of your picture.

    Re: boost leak test

If you have blocked all the appropriate intakes and the hose from the IC to the Throttle body (at the TB that's not in the pic above)....Then just a guess...since your car is an 04 (possibly with a few miles on it) you may have a leak in your OEM intercooler. The endtanks are known to leak and in worst case seperate/blow off; infact I just had this issue on my car ('02 w/ 57k miles).
Oil builds up in the lower intercooler hoses and the intercooler over time and miles and this maybe what you hear bubbling through a leak. I'd also look for oil residue/blow by everywhere around the piping and intercooler: it'll lead you right to the leak if that is indeed the case.

oh and BTW the pic above from Martini is from an 02 1.8t where the PCV return valve is attached to the TIP, newer ones have it up where you stated.

My car is the same way. The PCV valve is not on the tip, it's on the back of the head and honestly I have never seen it on the tip except for your car Martini. My car is an 03.

I'll take a deeper look tomorrow, when I heard the boiling/bubbling sound I decided to stop there (started to rain).

And thanks for the location of the valve. At least I'm not crazy lol.

    Re: boost leak test

if you get a lot of bubbling, there is a chance that you could put some oil in to the exhaust... you will have it burn off, but just let the car idle and it will clear up.. .no worries

    Re: boost leak test

they must have only done it for one year on the B6 and decided that was a bad location and put it on the back of the head where all are except the 02 im guessing.
