2003 5 Speed Tranny Drain Bolt Size?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I cannot figure out for the life of me which triple square bit i need. I bought a 10mm one today at NAPA, and first of all, WAY too small. Secondly, I also need a bit with the center drilled out (security bit). Do i need 12mm or what? I found a 16mm on ebay, but i would think thats too big...some help please.

its the 16mm 12point. i bought the one off of ebay. but you need to be careful, ive read of 03's being equipped with different plugs. aslong as you know that its the 12point with the security pin in the middle of it, you're set.

yea, i saw that earlier today, it does not list the size, just that its a 12-point bit. I really would not like to spend $28 for one plus shipping.

Well, the only thing I had to measure with was a regular tape measure.

    It's a good fit for a 12 point 14mm socket. A little loose in a 15mm socket.

That should be it as long as you can find a security bit.

Cock I just bought the oil for my tranny, I thought it was a 17mm hex... damn it :( so the verdict is a 14mm TS with security hole?

Are you planning on picking one up in person? If so, just do a test fit to see if it fits in a 14mm socket before you buy it.

You could just buy this, wait a day or two for it to arrive, and be done with it:

    Works perfectly fine for me.

Re: 2003 5 Speed Tranny Drain Bolt Size?

well, ok, so this is the problem...ive gotten in contact with snap-on and they are telling me from their paperwork that a 16mm is the one i need...but ^i contacted germanautoparts.com and they told me:
    "Nate,

To the best of our knowledge and according to the Vw/Audi parts guide you should require this tool below for the transmission drain plug."
(Which is the one you have pictured above)
    and

    "Nate,

I took a quick look, it does appear to be a 14mm. Definitely larger then the 12mm commonly we stock."

SO I STILL HAVENT GOTTEN ANYWHERE!!!

If you want. I won't be able to ship it out until Monday. I guess no one near you has it?

When can you get it back to me? I will need soon for I plan on modifying the center diff in my 2.8L 5spd trans and replacing all of the fluid in that before it goes into my Avant.

For the archives, I bought this tool from GAP and measured it with a micrometer. It is a 16mm security triple square, not 14 or 15. The allen size is obviously a 17mm for the fill plugs and for the diff plugs, and the center section (used to turn it) is 19mm. Thus, you need this tool and a 19mm box wrench or socket, and you're all set to change the fluid. A hand pump from Walmart is also helpful, and essential for the diff as you cant snake in a hose from above b/c there is no access from the top like with the trans.

You can also get it from www.metalnerd.com for $25 + shipping, which is about the same price.

Double check that you ABSOLUTELY need this part. I bought this part from Germanparts.com because everyone said to. I have on 02 manual 3.0 quattro. Both bolds on the transmission came off with your standard allen wrench.
