Check engine... pisses me off

Check engine come out like a month ago.

The code was 16804. I cleared it and it kept showing up.

16804/P0420/001056 - Catalyst System; Bank 1: Efficiency Below Threshold

I bought new oxygen sensor the one thats closer to turbo. And after two days the error came out again....

Idk if rain has to do with any of these but it seems that when it rains the error shows up.


If its not faulty o2 sensor then wtf is it ?

P0420 is a bad catalytic converter. If your car falls with in the 8yr/80k mile emissions warranty, the dealer will replace it 100% free of charge. I had mine does 2 months ago.

Ok i got my car from car auction.

When i bought it it was with only 2 coil packs ( who knows how many miles they made on 2 coil packs).

What are my options ?

its definately your cat, its clogged. and you only have 1 cat, so there is no second bank. the first O2 sensor measures the exhaust emissions before it is passed through the catalytic converter, the second O2 is to make sure the cat is doing its job efficiently.

and you only have 1 option, test pipe... just kidding. you could buy a new cat, but they aren't very cheap. i went the test pipe route.

which model is ur car?
1.8T or 3.0?

1.8T has only 1 cat with 2 o2 sensors while 3.0 has two cats with 4 o2 sensors (bank 1 and 2)

mine is 3.0 and I have exact same problem as yours, except both my cats are clogged.
code: P0431, P0421.
I called audi and they said we have emission control warranty of 8 years/80000miles whichever comes first. It covers cats.

Your code is the symptom.. but to know for sure is to go to the dealer and have them verify, and a test pipe will give you the same CEL unless you get the delete code with flashed software. If you don't have a warranty you won't be covered... sorry for all the negative news. You can get a universal Cat for about $100 and have a muffler shop install it though...

Because i heard that if cat is burned the emissions would not go out as easly and sometimes it would make like a kinda clicking noise when cat is broken up inside.

your car can be out of the "main" warranty..but, by law...audi has to warranty the emissions systems to 8yrs/80k miles.

When i got it it had only 2 ignition coils ( possible that someone was driving on only 2 cylinders thats why there is damage to the cat)

So the law says audi has to replace the cat ?

yes, the audi emission control warranty covers everyone in USA and Canada.

doesnt matter if you are the first owner or second owner etc..
as long as the VIN on their database showed this car was first serviced in USA/Canada and still under 8 years. (also ur mileage has to be under 80k miles)

i just bought one from velocity motoring today, via direct contact, they also have them on ebay sometimes too...i would get it replaced by the dealer first, so you have a new cat and the bolts were just recently broken loose...b/c normally, they are a PITA!!

doubt it would throw that code because of a leak...

and does nobody else run spark plug anti-foulers on their test pipes? ive had my test on for about 3-4 months now and has only thrown the code once when it was like 100 degrees outside. cleared it, and haven't seen it since.

I dont have a CEL, I had one about 2 months ago, I deleted the message and it went away. After a month a did a VAG check, and I found the message again.

My question is, "Intermittent" and no CEL mean They Won't Change it under waranty?

I got a 1.8T Auto. and 67k mile

I have an appointment to swap my exhaust next week, now that I read this thread, am considering delay my exhaust swap so dealer can throw me a brand new cat.

Any suggestions ?

OP:
Go to the Audi dealership and have them inspect and/or replace your cat if the cat is bad. Like mentioned earlier, it should be covered for 8years/80kmiles because it is a federal law and an emissions device. Once the cat is replaced then you can start thinking about getting a test pipe and software flash.


Fix the current problem before a new one pops up.


sidenote: Once the cat is fixed I can install the test pipe for you if you want.

So, depending on the dealership you go to, they may or may not fix it under warranty the fix time round.

Mine told me that because it is "intermittent", it has to happen at least twice before they will fix it. So lo and behold a month after the first CEL it happened again and so I got a new CAT. Agree with the rest the warranty covers up till 8yr/80k so if you're under that, you're very lucky.

So pretty much if your under 80k you hope your cats will go out so they can get replaced, and if your over you hope they never do....
