Damn Rear View

Down at the beach enjoying my weekend I noticed that my rear view mirror started leaking all over my interior!!!!!! I am so pissed. It was at night that it started leaking so I didn't notice it until I was getting out of my car. But it leaked all over my shifter, the leather surround, and my seats. How am I going to get this stuff off? I'm pretty sure it's permanent now. Does anyone know if the manufacturer is still replacing these at $75? Also, does anyone know where I can pick up a newer style with compass for cheap? Thanks

what was leaking out? didnt even know they leaked anything

It was leaking out from the bottom. And it was a olive color fluid that got everywhere. The short term fix was some super glue that I happend to have in my car at the time

the fluid cleans right up with a wet paper towel if I remember right. Don't go for the factory mirror, it will cost you around $350 =(

Some guy a month or two back made a thread on this forum (i think in one of the s4 sections) regarding a company that makes a factory replica auto dimming mirror for like $75

The fluid does not clean right up after it has had time to dry. And there really is no need to search search search when I clearly stated that I knew that the manufacturer had previously replaced the mirror for free at one time (now apparently charging $75). Also like I said before I was not going to go with the factory mirror I wanted to go with the b6 model mirror with compass display. So if anyone happens to know of where I can pick up a newer style mirror for cheap let me know. Thanks

bump I'm looking into car-part.com and shokan but does anyone know if the auto dimming with compass came on all (b6) a4 models or just some?

try the b6 forum, they'd tell you.
look in the classifieds on here and audiworld and craigs list, you could find someone parting out their car or selling theirs for cheap.
i'm wondering what fluid was leaking, i have no clue about mirrors

Seriously I thought that when you rear view mirror went bad it just looked like a yellow stain then all of a sudden the "electochromatic dimming oil " that it's been discribed as leaked out from the bottom. I thought it just stayed in there not leaked out on my car, I couldn't believe it. As far as I know all of our mirror's are filled with this but it's rare they leak out. Lucky me

Mine did that same thing in the hot Vegas summer. Got the liguid off my interior with some cleaners. Still didnt replace it looks like shat...

btw the b6 is a straight forward install just remove old and install new

yea the b6 bolts right up i tried my sisters sicne she has a b6 a4 and it slids in place and connects, only problem is finding a right price, ive tried junk yards no1 has them, tried shokan they wanted 275 i belive for a used one (wtf) and dealer is expensive as well, auditech i might have to go thru u lol

so a 2004 audi a4 mirror will bolt right up to a 2000 s4 and connect to the six pin connector?

it should, my sisters is a 2003 and it went in place, connected it (has compass) it turned on and compass worked fine and looks good, the only thing you need to change is the plasic cover in the back (the L shaped peice that covers the wire), keep the b5 s4 one it will clip on, the reason y u use the s4 plastic cover is cause the b6 one is to long, i have yet to find a cheap one with a compass...ahhh

I know same here I'm still looking around. I'm really not trying to spend over 150 for a new mirror

i've had this problem since i bought the car, bought it with the problem actually lol. its one of the "little things" that haven't quite made its way up the list yet, its getting up there though now that other things have been taken care of ;) i mean @ stage 3 you need a good rearview to see how far behind that biOtch is who tried ya ! lol

hah yeah it must be nice unfortunately I won't see the days of stage 3 for a long time so for now I need a rear view mirror to see the Prius I'm pulling away from lol

if im not mistaken, its actually an oil in there that reacts to the light coming in and dims the mirror at night. my outside mirror on the driver side is doing the same, however that im going to replace with the euro split mirror from ECS

the mirrors work like a calculator the liquid inside gets energized and gets dark, that liquid leaks out

This happened to me this morning!

That oily stuff ate through the rubberized soft touch coating of my shifter bezel as well. I tried wiping just the oily stuff up, and the coating came off with it.

WTF?

I'm interested in finding a replacement as well. I'm not finding any threads about anyone anywhere selling self dimming mirrors for $75.

Whats the info on the direct swap B6 mirror? Would an All Road mirror work? I know they had a built in compass.
