yesterday i was just driving around and went to the car wash, i have a '98 a4 2.8 and after the wash i just started it up to head out and it seemed like it was idling really low and gonna bog out, so i just drove 50m. and then when i shifted into second the engine started to stutter when accelerating and the check engine light came on. when i just let it idle it would bog down to about 500rpm and then raise a little but it really didn't sound good and came out of nowhere. any help on what this could be would be great.

i think you got water in your coils/spark plugs. Take off the coils and plugs and blow them off with an air gun. Should solve your problem

Run an vag-com on it. I had the same problem with my car, changed the coil pack, plugs, and still did it. Then I changed the fuel injectors and vag-com pulled out a code for the reference sensor. I am in the process changing the reference sensor.

    sounds like a mis-fire.
