Re: How are you guy's mounting a single sub style box into place?

I would put it in that cubby but 1. My car is a lease and 2. my sirius module is mounted onto the bracket. So all i would need is velcro and it'll keep it from sliding around? That type of carpet will have enough friction with the velcro is basically what im asking in simple words?

Is it possible to install that way on a sirius equipped car? The new slim JL subs look like they would be up to the task.

Yes. My XM module is mounted up inside this cubby space (yellow arrow) in the body of the car via double-sided tape. This funky cubby area is part of the body of my car located behind my sub box. If you take out the plastic tray (pictured below) that the module is screwed to, you will see the cubby area on the body that I am talking about. My sub enclosure is mounted in the same factory holes that this plastic tray uses on the car's body.

Re: How are you guy's mounting a single sub style box into place?

I posted this in my own thread, but I'll throw it out there again. Had this done just last week, and they did an outstanding job utilizing space in that side of the trunk. They managed to put a JL 10W7 into this space, and if you can fit a proper enclosure in there for that sub, you could fit one for pretty much any other :

Here's another angle, in which I've outlined the dimensions of the enclosure that is all hidden behind the trunk lining:

EDIT: Just for the hell of it, I'll show where the amp is mounted, since it couldn't hurt to give you some location ideas for that as well. It's mouted just beside the stock subwoofer, to the underside of the rear deck above the back seats:

This is all integrated to the stock Symphony head unit and speaker system, btw.

The only thing that'd prevent this from working out is if you have a factory Sirius or XM tuner. However, if that's the case, just use the right side w/ the storage net.

As for securing your current box, the other guys here are definitely right on; Velcro is ideal so as to avoid drilling/screws, and the Audi trunk lining is perfect for Velcro to latch on to. As for how to do it, I would suggest going along each edge of the bottom side, so that you essentially outline the edge of the bottom of the box. That way, it's got strips that'll fight both forward/backward and side-to-side G's. Best of luck!

B7A4Sport, Be careful about mounting JL Audio amps upside down. You can easily overheat them. I have 2 JL amps in my other car and love them, but did not use them for my Audi specifically because they are not designed to be mounted upside down. I went with a Zapco amp because I wanted it mounted upside down and they use a constant running fan which allows the amp to be mounted in any position.

B7Asport--- nice set up ! but yeah as swoardrider stated earlier .... Ventilation is Key with these electronics that create so much heat. it seems like the fin design on the amp will lend itself to be upside down but none the less .. just a precaution. Other than that ... nice custom box !

Re: How are you guy's mounting a single sub style box into place?

Well i did it the right way and had a buddy who works at a sound shop build me one. It's specifically made for the sub at 1.5sq ft and made the amp look flush with no wire showing and tons of air for the amp to breath. Now i can use my trunck again and get rid of the POS i had in there.

Hey, I'm thinking about building a box like yours, I checked out that site you posted (a4mods) and looked at the DIY for the enclosure, one problem though, on his car he doesn't have the tray for the Sirius like you do, how did you "mold" your fiberglass around this?

i wanted to go that route (cubby hole) but was told, you would sacrifice some sound for looks. meaning you wouldnt get the full potential out of the sub. it looks bad ass though. for those of you that have it, how do you like the sound?

Re: How are you guy's mounting a single sub style box into place?

joseb: Going by what my shop told me, you cannot do a PROPER woofer install to this space if you're utilizing it for the Sirius tuner. The reason being, you wouldn't want to mold the box around such a large space and sacrifice that air. A good solution, however, is to merely use the right-hand pocket instead, since they ripped out all the plastic pieces from the left-hand one for my install.

Josh877: I actually had an IMPROVEMENT in the sound quality, in my opinion. Part of this is resulting from the Audi's more solid general sound-proofing when compared to my last car (a 1994 Nissan Maxima), but I'm sure part of it is also because I went from MDF to fiberglass for the enclosure.

I posted a pic of my setup a few replies up with a red outline of the size of the enclosure behind the trunk lining - it is MUCH bigger than just the small cubby-hole. I also said in another thread today, that the most important part of any enclosure, stealth-install or not, is getting the amount of air matched to the woofer's demands. My particular sub needs more space than most others its size, which is why they needed to gouge so far behind the trunk lining to create air-space.

Just make sure you go to a high-quality shop, and they will set you up right. Go somewhere ghetto, and you get what you pay for......

Dump the tray, mount the Sirius module some place else, tape off the car's body to form the shape for the rear of the box, and use the tray's stock mounting points to mount your sub box.

Sound quality is clean and tight, but the bass is by no means earth shattering.

Josh: amazingly, no, they didn't need to............and no, I have no idea how they didn't need to either! lol Check out my other post w/ more pics, you will see the only space lost is how far the 3 bars that make up the grill stick out.

Also, to the people warning me about heat issues w/ my amp, I believe you are mistaking which orientation by which JL considers "upside-down" The way I did it is ok, the way you wouldn't wanna do it is like this:

thanks! that helps, i don't have sirius so i don't need to worry about mounting it someplace else, so you just taped right to the body of the car and fiberglassed in the trunk?
