    I think you have to go with a custom fit. I've been researching this for my non-Avant. The following looks like a common solution:

    I've seen something similar on a B7. In both cases, it looks as if the mounting bolts go through the spare wheel well sheetmetal - I don't care for this personally, though it would likely be fine.

    I just want to mount a bike rack and don't plan to tow at all. I would think hooking into the aluminum structural bumper inside the cosmetic one would be most elegant. The hitch receiver could then exit through the rear valance. That way, it wouldn't be as likely to result in grounding out and could be near invisible when not in use. I was going down this road initially, but it turns out that the valance is integrated with the bumper on the 25th Anniversary / DTM bumper. Replacing a hacked valance would be one thing, but an entire bumper ...
