    High Oil Temps!

Ok so yesterday i was doing some modierate driving (on off gas on highway) and my oil temp gets really high, really fast! Under normal driving and during the winter ( toronto ) my oil temp goes jsut a hair over 80c. or the second line. Yesterday with the temprature at 24c and sunny my oil temp was going between 80-100c and it was pretty much on 100c (third line).

This happened to me last year too when i got my car chipped.

. I figure that obviously the hotter temprature is cause the car to tun hotter. I am wondering what will help me the most in this situtaion? I know obviously an oil cooler is oging to drasticaly lower the oil temprature and keep everything running cooler. My question is would a FMIC OR SMIC also allow me to run lower oil temps since my turbo is runny cooler and isent getting as hot? Is it worth it for me to get and install a FMIC/SMIC and see how it lowers my oil temps or is the only way i can fix this going to be getting an oil cooler kit? If so any good kits that arnt too pricey?

    Thanks,

    Anthony

Sounds normal... But what weight are you using? I just swapped to 5W-40 from 5W-30 and it runs a bit cooler and better pressure...

i run 5w-40. Would i get lower oil temps with a fmic since it is cooling the turbo better ?

Sounds normal. These cars run hot oil temps. A FMIC is gonna make the oil temp even hotter. At least thats what happened to me when I added a FMIC. It blocks some air flow and makes everything run hotter.

Best bet is a better oil. What brand and weight oil are you running.

Thats not how a FMIC works. It cools the air going into the motor. It doesn't cool the turbo.

The FMIC doesn't cool the turbo: it cools the charge air after you boost it. Keeps you on the advance curve w/o detonation. 100*C is pretty much the norm: I'm seeing 105*C here in HotLanta. Running GIAC, Forge DV, OEM SMIC.

my oil temp in cool weather is right at 200*F and with the hotter weather now it creeps up to about 225*-240*F. FWIW I'm running Castrol Syntec 5w50.

technically speaking, A FMIC does help the turbo run cooler due to freer flowing piping, causing the turbo to not work as hard, and avoids overspeed of the turbine

    Re: High Oil Temps!

Just a bit of misinformation in this thread. An FMIC is just a heat exchanger. As stated a few posts above, it cools incoming air by exchanging the heat from the charged/pressurized air to the outside ambient air, after it passes through the turbo. This is why some have observed hotter engine temps, an FMIC passes the heat onto the radiator. The air the radiator would have had incoming is hotter, and the radiator has less surface area to transfer heat with an FMIC blocking the way.

Long story short, IMHO if you're really concerned (which I wouldn't be in Toronto) run an extra oil cooler to directly cool the oil - watch out for winter and your oil getting TOO cold though. Or, as was also stated earlier run better oil that won't break down in higher temps.

My engine is stock and I've never seen above 80C, so I'd be a bit concerned if I watched it rise to 100C, but not enough to make any major modifications.

ok i understnad the fmic wont make it cooler, i didnt need 5 diffrent peopel to repeate the exact same thing. And here in toronto the summers get hotter then a lot of palces south of us! the chip is what make the higher temps beucase stock it takes a lot mroe to get that high.

i run the best oil possible for this car MOTOL 5w40

    Re: High Oil Temps!

run a cooler thermostat if you can. i'm running a 80 c stat in my car, and a 71 in my wife's avant. her car runs barely @ 185 F on freeway 190 ish stop & go traffic. on her stock 87 c t stat she was running a little higher than 250. your coolant temp will affect your oil temp somewhat through the oil cooler.
82mm je pistons, scat rods, ported & polished aeb head. gt2871r, atp hi flow manifold (ported). 580cc injectors on custom giac tune. Once you boost, you'll never go back....

Not on balance. You get more air flow. You push down on the loud pedal more. Your heat input (exhaust gasses) goes up. Thermo rules: Q-dot = m-dot x delta-T. The charge air going into the engine is coller, but the stay time in the turbo is insignificant compared to the heat input of the exhaust gasses.
