    New project. (new pictures)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Well I started a new project since my Hagus Sport mirrors sold, and after some work I have decided to share my progress with the rest of my fellow AZers. As you know mirror options are not plentiful for the B5 A4 so I decided to try something a little different.

When I bought the car it had stock mirrors on it but I was also offered the Hagus mirrors as well. I later found out that the owner also had a Passat wagon and he had installed the A4 Hagus mirrors on the Passat with the only modification being that he had to re-drill the mounting hole. Well that got me to thinking if the reverse was possible and this is what I came up with.

I ordered an MK5 mirror that was designed for the Passat with a smoked turn signal and CF shell. Here are some pictures of the progress so far and it was far more difficult than I had planned. I had expected to have to do some wiring but I did not expect to have to do as much cutting and trimming as I ended up doing. Let ne know what you think and I will be more than willing to share my experience with anyone who may want to try the same.

It was starting to get dark so I will post some better pictures tomorrow.

More detailed pictures added in post # 22

Actually that's the way the Hagus mirrors fit as well and it never leaked as the mirror is completely sealed against the door frame. Since this is a custom install though I am working on getting it perfect. The gap is actually smaller than pictured since my son was just holding the mirror in place so I could take some pictures and look at the fitment.

The 2008 has a 10" lift on 20's and 39's, the older Chevy has a 12" lift on 20's and whatever size is bigger than 39's. The truck that looks stock is sitting on 20's as well and he also has two Chevy classics fully restored both which are built for show and sit on 22's.

So yes he is a Chevy NUT!! ........

I don't know that one. It would have to be something you would have to try yourself. The B5 Passat is pretty close to the B5 A4 so it was worth a shot, especially since I knew the Audi mirrors fit on the Passat.

Unfortunately it was like a 1992 Sentra and Civic wheel that are both a 4/100 bolt pattern. The Nissan wheel will fit on the Civic but the Civic wheel will not fit on the Sentra because it has a smaller center bore.

The inner housing on the Audi is smaller than the Passat housing so the Audi mirror will fit a passat a lot easier than a Passat mirror will fit an Audi.

The best thing to do is find a B6 Audi and take some measurements of the door and see if they are close. I don't think they are since the B6 is bigger.

    Re: New project.

I'll do a write up once the harness is done so that it will be complete. The trimming was actually quite a lot more than I had expected so that is why I was excited once I got them to sit flush with the body. I didn't take a before picture of the mounting brackets but I will take some pics of how they look now with all the areas trimmed down.

I have not decided where to tap into the turn signal for the mirrors. I was thinking of just using the one from the fender and either hiding the wire or try to make it look factory in a wire loom.

not bad. are those things a lot bigger than stock though? maybe i just think that cuz of my small passenger side one on my car.

anyways what is the cost on those mirrors? just curious to see overall cost difference between just having winston/terry do it or buy some like that.

Terry charges around $400+, (I'm not sure on the exact price) for an overlay on the stock mirror housing, and beacuse of the curves and shape it is not an easy process.

I was able to buy the mirrors, smoked turn signals and CF overlays, (all new) for the same price and since I sold both my stock and Hagus mirrors no money came out of my pocket.

As for the size, they are about the same as the Hagus ones I had on there. I will do a side by side comparison of the two mirrors to show the difference. One thing I noticed is that the base of the Passat mirror is larger than the Audi. If you look at the Hagus mirror you will notice that the base goes under the weather stripping where the Passat goes over it. It still creates a good seal so I do not think water will be an issue. Once everything is buttoned up I will give it a good hose test .........

    Re: New project.

Well I finally got the mirrors on 100% perfect. They had to be perfect as far as I was concerned but I don't know if this would qualify a simple DIY project. Two tools that I have that are absolutely needed are a Roto Zip and Dremel because there is no way I could have done any of the detailed trimming and cutting of both the mounting bracket and the outer cover without these tools. The Roto Zip was perfect for cutting in tight spots while the Dremel was perfect for cutting plastic and leaving a nice finished edge.

I spent the whole day perfecting one side and once that was done the other side went a lot quicker. I am very happy with the end results and I will post some detailed picture tomorrow.

    Re: New project.

The biggest difference you will notice is that the new mirror goes over the weather seal as opposed to behind it like the factory mirror did. You can see the difference in the first pictures I posted of the Hagus mirror, as our mirrors have a smaller base. I only worked on the fitment so now I am going to work on some solutions to make sure this set-up is completely water proof. It is almost there I just need to make it 100%

No, that will work perfect. I have to use 3 for the motor. The other 2 can be used for either the turn signal or the defrost. When I had the Hagus mirrors installed I only used the three wires for the motor and never hooked up the defrost, so I don't see a need for it now being that I have been without it for over three years .......

But I guess that would depend on where you live. Those will work fine. You have a PM.

It looks like that vertical edge closest to the window that bends towards the glass is taller/thicker than stock mirrors? Maybe if you trimmed it, it would sit a little closer to the body and would fall under the seal more easily. But I can't see the underside of the structure so either that's a lip, or there's more material behind it. Just my 2 cents.

    Re: New project. (new pictures)

The rubber seal has a separation in it. Where the mirror comes out from under the seal is where it stops and the rest of the mirror was designed to be outside of the seal. It was the same with the Hagus mirror as well and that mirror was designed for the Audi.

Since this car never had the stock mirrors, I have no reference but I didn't want to cut up the mirrors to much because it would have to be done perfectly. Another reason that I cannot trim it more is because the edge has a lip that folds in to get closer to the glass and if I trim it more it will actually look crappy and have more of a gap.

Thanks for all the input fellas as this was by no means a plug and play project. It ended up being a lot harder than I had expected to get the mirrors to fit this close but so far I like the look so it was worth the effort.
