Is it difficult to rebuild our turbos?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I want to do a k04 upgrade and found a pair with one that is blown. I was thinking about rebuilding them. Is it difficult to do? Im pretty competant mechanically and do most of my own work on our cars. Anybody have any experience with this? how would it rate 0-10 in difficulty and is it even worth doing? thanks.

its only about $10 and a couple paperclips, you can do it yourself as long as you have a can opener.

Really its very expensive and you probably cant do it yourself. Dont get them unless you are getting them for free, just buy new. Turbos arent somehting you want to go cheap on.

If your replacing the CHRA's then you can do it your self, but if your going to be taking the compreor apart then you'll need to have it re balanced. You shoudl buy some RS6 CHRA's and swap them in, Port, polish, cermaic coat the hot side, and you should have a nice hybrid set. GL

Re: Is it difficult to rebuild our turbos?

RS6 CHRA does not fit compressor side or the turbine side. You will need to precision machine/bore out the compressor inlet to fit the larger compressor wheel and machine the turbine housing to fit the larger turbine wheel. You might as well go straight RS6 at that point IMO.

As for re-building K04's...if you're replacing the entire CHRA you can do it yourself no problem at all. Since you're replacing the entire rotating assembly in one piece you simply undo the compressor and turbine housing bolts, take out old CHRA, pop in new CHRA, torque the housings back to spec and make sure they're clocked correctly (marking position before taking apart them makes it easy). Swapping CHRA's doesn't require any kind of special balancing since it's the whole assembly.

    what he said..

rs6's are nice (what I have), but if you really want hybrids, their are bigger option's. It expensive to do the hybrids, so unless your getting a really good price, Id just stick to pjko4.

unless the turbos are really beat up and have scarring or serious damage, it should be easy.

just take them apart and replace cartridges, etc. not that hard.
