Easiest Way to do a headgasket...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Like it says, Im staring at the engine (not mine, yes its a 2.7T) on the floor and I want to know what the easiest way is to get at the headgaskets. I was thinking of maybe pulling the headbolts and just lifting the heads up slightly to get the clearance I need? Would I need to pull anything specifically to get me the room or no?

    Thanks for your help

Re: Easiest Way to do a headgasket...

Is this Deb38's S4? The one that recently blew a headgasket? If so, why isn't he posting up this thread himself?

Do you think his blown HG could be due to detonation? Could it have anything to do with his SSP/2001S4NY fueling kit/tune? The reason I ask is because I heard his tune is based off of a RS4 K-Box file which is programmed specifically for RS4 knock sensors, not S4 knock sensors. So running that file with the S4 knock sensors could lead to detonation which could result in a popped head gasket just like what happened to Derek's car. That really sucks, but I'm sure it could have been much worse! I just hope other cars running the same setup won't meet the same fate later on down the road!

You cant just lift the heads bud, you need to take the timing belt off, water jackets, etc... It's a pretty involved job, best bet is to do it the right way. Dont reuse the head bolts also, they are one time use stretch bolts. Hope this helps, i know its not what you wanted to hear.

Thanks Justin, we just wanted to double check. We got some new bolts to go in when it's all ready to go.

Our main problem was having no cam lock bar.

I know that we have all the new parts. I just want to know exactly what we need to do to get the heads off. Like what exactly do we need to disconnect? Can we leave the heads connect with the intake manifold also? and then just slide the heads off together? Seriously I want to just get them up a tiny bit, pop the old one out, and the new one in, and be done

It's really best to do a clean job on a turbo motor. You have to take off the intake manifold, that will hold the heads down since they need to go up an angle away from the middle. Take your time, check the blcok and heads, clean them up a little, use some copper gasket spray when reassembling.

Re: Easiest Way to do a headgasket...

see this is why i barely post here anymore, this is ridiculous.... nothing has been happening between you guys as of late and its been fine. Why do you have to bring up the past, isn't this fued over yet? Marc you know Greg's tune didn't blow up Derek's car, and if it did, im pretty sure he would tell me. and i wouldn't be going for my turbos if his engine blew up, this is the only car that is mine that i have, i can't afford to lose it...

Its a fued that will never end with anyone that has ever been envolved with marc.

I just finshed up my HG's, Cam lock bar and cranj pin is a must since you need to remove the timing belt. You will need to remove the intake to get the heads off properly like Justin said above. You'll also need to unbolt the Exhaust manifolds from the turbos and the brackets that are hollding some lines (to the turbos) off the back of the heads. the black coolant pipe behind the heads needs to come off. You can figure it out just by looking at it. Dont go the easy way as that will result in fucking your shit up even more. GL to you boys

Re: Easiest Way to do a headgasket...

The intake and exhaust mani's have to come off. You don't absolutely NEED the cam lock bar as long as you obsessively mark and re-mark the position of the cam pullies, crank pully, and belt.
