Need to make decision on CVT car.. input-

In market for a newer A4.. Found a sweet deal, 2006 Black/black with 20k miles. Auto, CVT tranny. Car appears to be in good shape, I think I can get it for $19,000. Would you pull the trigger?

I drive allll day long for work, all I do is drive (real estate agent) so it needs to be reliable, the CVT is bugging me out. It is a younger kid (foreigner) now who owns it, car may have been beat on.. Should I take it to the dealer and have them look it over before purchasing? Can they tell if the tranny is damaged at all with 20k miles on it? Anything else they should look at? The car runs/ drives pretty good, seems solid. Thanks, and yes I did search for all this trying to get my own answers..

Re: Need to make decision on CVT car.. input-

cvt does suck, but if you get an s-line then at least youll get paddle shifters. the car should still have around 2 years left on the warranty and 20k miles isnt a lot so i wouldnt cry about it being beat on, especially if youre gonna beat on it anyway. and if its certified preowned then you have 2 more years coverage anyway so i really wouldnt sweat it. dont forget that 2006 is a good year cuz you SHOULD get free scheduled maintenance with it. that means that the original owner likely had his car well maintained (cuz it was free) and youll be able to do the same without breaking the bank.

I know CVT sucks.. but for $19,000 can I go wrong?? I'm just using it for city driving, mainly a work car to take clients out- not looking to mod much but I don't want it to shit the bed after a year either and fork out 9k for a tranny. Is there anything I should have the dealer check over before purchasing?

Re: Need to make decision on CVT car.. input-

I have the CVT and the biggest problem for me is the lack of parts, ie exhaust. My tranny is fine, even with the chip. If you are gonna use it for just driving around, i'd say go for it. I was getting 32 mpg while i was doing a 45 min each way commute. I wouldn't worry about the tranny blowing up, esp since you'd have 30k miles and 2 years left on the warranty

If you will be driving all day.....You should ask yourself, do I really want to be shifting everytime I drive? It gets old after a while IMO. I love being able to finally sit back and drive like a PIMP.

True that. As much as I would like to be able to haul in manual, I like CVT. Auto when I want, shift when I want.

Auto is already FTL... CVT is FTMFL... so you should go with stick... and learn it. you'll never go back

If you live in Boston wouldn't it make more sense to get a Quattro?

I'm in the minority here, but I have a CVT and I like it. That's what really matters, not what some guy on the internet says.

Re: Need to make decision on CVT car.. input-

CVT has plusses and minuses, but buying a car that you suspect may have been driven hard can lead to BIG headaches. If you have any doubts about that, skip.

P.S. My wife's 2008 B7 2.0t CVT isn't so bad. The overall response (kickdown, etc) is more than adequate for daily driving, and It gets way better gas mileage than my B6 6-speed 1.8t.
