Chip with an automatic? Is it worth it (will you notice)?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi,

I am thinking of chipping with a Revo stage 1 on my 2008 A4 automatic with Quattro. I had a few questions.

When driving in (D) mode, & going easy, will I notice a large decrease in MPG?

When driving in (D) mode & going hard, will I notice a difference?

Is there a bigger difference in (S) mode?

Should I buy the Forge DV before I have any problems with the intentions of swapping it in when I have problems (as I understand that is going to be needed).

Overall, a Revo stage 1 chip worth it?

    Thanks,
    Rich

Re: Chip with an automatic? Is it worth it (will you notice)?

I'd say the Revo stage 1 is worth it. I have a FWD CVT and it made a huge difference in my car, but it isn't the Tip. THere was a big difference in all the modes for my car, D is a lot better and usable (esp since the CVT is weak sauce in D). In Tip and S, the car pulls a lot harder. It's enough to have made me paranoid. I have a Forge DV, but have decided to wait until the stock one goes or I get out of the car's warranty, before having it installed.

The only thing I'm worried about right now is my PCV. I think it was on it's way out before and may be in need of replacing.

Get the chip, makes the car run like it should, esp at the price. You can't go wrong.

I have a tip and the chip is an amazing car. Im at Stage II+ with an intercooler on the way and you wouldn't believe how beast an automatic A4 can become with a stock turbo. Really really worth it.

When driving in (D) mode, & going easy, will I notice a large decrease in MPG?

NO, unless you drive like 10X more assholey, your gas mileage should stay similar, if doesn't get BETTER

When driving in (D) mode & going hard, will I notice a difference?

    1100000% absolutely yes

Is there a bigger difference in (S) mode?

I personally think so but I think it's because the chip has a greater effect from 3000rpm and up and "S" mode holds your gears longer (esp. third)

Should I buy the Forge DV before I have any problems with the intentions of swapping it in when I have problems (as I understand that is going to be needed).

I'd say just rock the stock DV until it tears and even then, just have your dealership replace it under warranty.

Overall, a Revo stage 1 chip worth it?

    No. just kidding. YES

Don't bother with the forge DV until you are out of warranty. I bought one but mine hasn't died on me yet (GIAC X software) and it's an '06 with an early revision DV, if not the first. Apparently the '08 ones are pretty reliable.

If you have the forge DV just install it when you have it chipped, then you hve no worries about wether you might have a leak or something.

ok youre in new york so come into jersey and goto riverside audi for a test drive of the apr. then come down to KMD for a test drive of revo. why did you think that having a tip would mean that its not worth getting? take the test drive and then decide for yourself. i dont think anyone has looked back after the test.

Of course you are going to notice. By the way, I dont know how much you know about these tranys but they are strong and can hold a good amount of power. I dont understand why people fear so much. Maybe because its an automantic and there is more electronics that go along with it. But the software companies get around that.

Depends on the shop you get your car chipped at. Some places charges you for labor but others don't so just ask around before you get it.

Re: Chip with an automatic? Is it worth it (will you notice)?

To bring this up again (I got busy on the rear view camera & Ipod video in the RNS install). I guess with gas prices, lately I seem to be driving in the 2500rpm - 3500rpm range. I will usually go a bit faster when getting on the highway.

I took it up to 4500rpm today to get a feel for the higher RPM's. Of course by then I was going to fast for a local 45mph road (closer to 75).

So, with that being said, will you notice a difference with an Auto in the 2500-3500 RPM range? Or is a chip much better at 4000RPM+?

I am hesitant in getting a trial, I just want to either get it, or dont get it. I dont doubt that at 4500RPM, I will feel more of a boost of power, but in everyday, around town driving, I dont know if thats realistic (at 4500RPM) unless I want to play GTA4 around town.

    Thanks,
    Rich
