dropping in used engine - couple of dumb questions

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
My engine blew a few months ago and after assessing all the damage and weighing my options I decided to buy a used engine. Got the engine in and just about have everyting hooked back up. But I have a couple of questions about stuff I forgot where they go. These a probably really obvious but after working all day I'm beat and my brain isn't funtioning properly.

Where does the small wire that comes off the alternator go? (circled in the pic below... I may not even have it routed anywhere near where it is supposed to go)

Where did this brace come from?

Sorry about the crappy cell phone pics. My gf took my camera on a trip this weekend. I ended up not being able to go because my grandmother died and the funeral is this weekend.

I got most stuff figured out and hooked back up. Sorry if these two queations are really dumb. I feel like an idiot for asking but decided it would save me time. Any help is greatly appreciated.

btw... here are a few pics of the carnage.

Valves came in contact with the piston on #1. Bent the valves and messed up the piston a bit. I'm pretty sure the rod broke since when you turn the engine over #1 just sits there. But I haven't pulled the pan on the old engine yet. Once I have everything buttoned back up I'll inspect the bottom end of the old engine and see what parts are sellable.

on an s4 that little clip connects to a small metal tab on the starter. Maybe the A4 is the same. It would not look obvious like a "missed'' connection.

Wire looks like it actually goes to the A/C compressor but I cannot tell with those pics... What color is it? If it was for the A/C, doesn't make sense back there...

That bracket is what hold the dipstick tube in place...

    Nice Mazda BTW!

that brace is for the intake manifold. You can toss it.

That clip....that pic isn't very clear. I think it might go to the starter...but that clip is supposed to be white. Get a better pic of the clip

That brace thingy is for the IM as stated, i am pretty sure that wire connects to the small one for the alternator, routes under the IM. You will probably find the other end under the manifold. If not, it goes to the small 8mm threaded connection on the rear of the alt

Re: dropping in used engine - couple of dumb questions

No guys... That bracket is more of a u-shaped peice, so it is for the dipstick tube, to keep it from moving around too much... The intake manifold one is more of a cylinder shaped bar... THIS is the manifold support...

Re: dropping in used engine - couple of dumb questions

Thanks guys... yeah I have the IM braket installed and it is the cylinder shaped one. Looking on my old block I couldn't really see anywhere that it could hook to the dipstick tube. The snub mount bracket seems to be correct... haven't looked to see how it fits, but I seem to remember some bracket there now.

The plug is either a light blue or light purple (I'm partially color blind and have trouble distinguishing between some blues and purples). One end is already hooked to the alt. The other end is the loose end in the picture. Seems like the starter would be a likely place for it. But I already had a wire hooked to the small tab on the starter. I'm going to check today and see if I have a wire hooked to the starter that shouldn't be.

Yes I've replaced the timing belt, water pump and countless hoses, orings, gaskets while I had everything out.

Thanks for the comments about the mazda. It is far from stock, but I still like the near stock exterior. It is my toy and the main reason I opted to just drop a used engine in the a4 instead of rebuild mine to be a 2.0. It will stay totally stock except for the chip. I don't have enough money to build them both up right now and there are still alot of things I want to do to the 7.

Re: dropping in used engine - couple of dumb questions

Confirmed that the bracket is for the snub mount. It actually goes from the driver's side motor mount bracket to the snub mount.

    Thanks Poopie!

The small wire that I currently have hooked to the starter has a white connector and I traced it back and it seems to go to the ecu. That seems logical that it would send the signal for the starter to turn over. But where does the blue/purple wire from the alt go? What wires hook up to the starter? Is there another connection on it that I'm missing somewhere?
