Cracked cylinder head ... fix and sell, or just sell?

My 2001 A4 1.8T Quattro with Tiptronic recently blew the head gasket resulting in a cracked cylinder head. It will cost $4600 in parts and labor to have it fixed and I have already put $4000 into getting the heater fixed (don't ask). Considering my car has 141k miles but is in good shape otherwise, what do you think I should do?

a) Get it fixed then sell it (how much do you think I could get?)
b) Just sell it as is (how much do you think I could get?)
c) Push it off a cliff and make an insurance claim
d) Donate to charity
e) Other (suggestions welcomed)

This totally sucks and any constructive advice would be much appreciated.

Are you getting the head repaired or are you getting a new head? Might be cheaper, depending on how much used heads go for.

If all that is bad is the cylinder head and not a cracked block, just start looking here or on the vortex for a used head. On a previous B5(passat) I owned with 20 bent valves, I bought a *bad* head for $300 that had 2 cracked valves and had a machine shop R&R it for around $300 with 2 new valves and all new seals/guides. I also put some good used pistons in it for a grand total of around $1200 in parts. So, if all you need is the head replaced.... what's that about $400-500 labor plus a used head which might run $600? You're getting hosed. Find a new mechanic that charges for what they do, not what the book says.
I won't even ask about the $4000 heat issue. jeesh.

You can buy a head from a car being parted out. Make sure you buy the AWM head. Look at junkyards and even ebay for a used one.

i have an AEB head for sale it wil bolt up and run fine if you want it to sell the car

where do people come up wtih this stuff? i hope you haven't paid anything to that shop. you could get a new engine and trans for that much money.

take your car away from them, buy used head for less than $1000. and fix yourself..

and i don't even want to know how badly you got raped with the heater incident.

the aeb will not bolt up perfect.. he has a 2001, 2001's have vvt. I say just find an engine and make it brand new again. You could do that for under $2000. Then you'll have no worries. Till your abs module goes, if it hasnt yet.. haha

you can have a fully built engine with upgraded turbo with that money.
sell the old engine for a few change and buy the other parts to complete the BAT install.

after I had my timing belt incident, i took it to a local salvage yard who deals in audi and other german cars, they charged $3000 for the removal/install of a used motor ~ 60-70k miles including clutch. And I thought I was getting reamed..

(just had to take it back once for them to put "MY" old Alternator on...)

There is no way with the problems my car has had that I can convince my wife that we should keep it. I have to get rid of this car before something else pops up. I am looking into selling it as is to someone who may want to put in a new cylinder head on it themselves ...
