SP51X (Hybrid K04-15)

Well after buying a Dead K04-15 from Canada for $200 I now have a rebuilt Hybrid K04-15 SP51 nickname Outlaw.


And here she is






Plan are to fit her in two weeks time before I go on holiday (finger crossed) and then when I get back to install my secondhand Stage III southbends Clutch ($100) providing I sort out a single mass flywheel.

Once this is done custon Exhaust will be on the cards before a Remap.

I have big hopes for the turbo so we will see how it goes.

Looks sick! But isnt a stage3 clutch a tad overkill? what did the rebuild run you?

this should be interesting to watch, ^^no stage 3 i think would be a perfect clutch for the K04, its not just horsepower that destroys clutches, torque does to. Since you are the first to do this on the board you are definitely going to have to dyno... Good luck

Well after the cost to buy the dead turbo it was $650 for all the work which meant all the internals are new with K04-23 shaft turbine manifold & compressor housing shaft, this shaft is found specifically on Audi Motor sport cars so the upgrade requires re-profiling of the turbine housing to accept the larger K04-023 turbine shaft.

The K04-023 has approximately 3mm larger inducer compared to the K04-015 sharing the same exducer.
In addition this upgrade includes the over-sized SP51X compressor wheel, updated Bearing Housing with "twin-feed" oil channels.

Your turbo is new, we don't use regenerated components on SP51 projects.
Everything is new except for the turbine manifold & compressor housing.

The car will be setup on a rolling road so dyno figures will be posted once every thing is done and funds permitting that is but Im looking for around 270bhp based on the facts 225TT with the K04-23 turbos can be mapped to 280bhp without any mods bar exhaust.

I don't have a clue about mapping so I’m having it custom mapped on the rollers by a pro as we don't get any K04 file here as our fuel is slightly different to yours so every thing tends to be custom although I would think the company will keep a copy of the file for future tunes and a good base map once done.

One thing I need to find out is what the stock injectors can handle as I'm not sure if our injectors are the same rating as the US but I do know we have 4bar FPR as standard compared to your 3bar so I may just have it mapped with the standard setup.

Another note is that I run a AJL engine which is DBW on a 2000 which you guys will find strange plus I don't think you got the AJL engine in the US either.

ATW was DBW in 2000 in the US, but no AJL in the US.

It will be fun to see what we can get out of these, as mine will be here next week after i destroyed the sp15 with the jubilee clip. They have rebuilt it to the above state like Docs.

I am also dbc, but currently running an APU engine with an AEB head/manifolds, again i don't think you have the APU DBW engine over there either do you?

no. our motors are 97-99 aeb, drive by cable, big port. 2000 atw, drive by wire, small port. and 2001, awm. drive by wire. small port.

aeb and atw share the same internals, misus the cylinder heads of course. but they are both i/m shaft driven oil pump and 20mm wrist pins.

awm uses a chain drive pump. w/ 19mm tapered rods.

You have cracks on the exhaust side... See the small separator? one big crack one small crack.

My old KO3 is the same way, but worse. Made a crazy ticking noise

I was assured that it was ok to use, and its making good power etc with no ill effects. As they had to machine the housing they checked it thoroughly I always cool her down properly so hope it wont get any worse

Well, Honestly good luck. Im really surprised they let that fly. The crack on the left will open up into the atmosphere soon, mine did. Sure i could hold boost the same, but for how much longer? It made a crazy ticking noise under boost at high RPM's.. Im 100% positive it was and exhaust leak out of that small area.

Anyways, Good luck! I hope it last many more miles! You can probably get it tig welded up...

You might consider grinding the crack down to solid and creating a smooth radius. That might prevent any further creepage.

The crack on the right is about 1" deep.. I dont think thats an option for him.. Also his is installed already..
