    5w40 motor oil in So.Cal

Hey everyone - does anyone know where I can: (1) buy 5w40 oil, and (2) for the best price? What's the best brand, and how often should I change the oil? I've read a few threads saying they change it every 3000 - is this right?? Seeing how expensive these oil changes can be, this seems a bit excessive.

3k is said to be overkill. i think not, i think its just being safe, plus its half as much as a tank of gas. 3k lasts me 6 months tho. and its almost impossible to find 5w40 in socal. i went EVERYWHERE. so i just went with 5w30 cause my dad who is an incredible sr. executive engineer for boeing and airbus fuel systems gave me the run down on the difference between 30 and 40 and said (im speaking in lame mans terms)it has to due with temperature ranges. and with the temperature ranges in socal, which dont fluctuate as much as lets say back east where it gets extremely cold, you should not have to worry about to much of a temperature change. i dont really remember but most importantly is the 5w or 0w part which is the viscosity. he also told me that when you use 0w, which is less viscous than 5w, allows the metal in (for example, your crankshaft which is constantly rubbing at an extreme friction) to wear at a much faster rate, which decreases the life of your internal engine. so basically with 5 weight, there is more cushion between engine parts, which provides much more lubricant and less friction. he told me the reason why people run 0 weight is because, with less resistance due to a lower viscosity, it gives you a little higher power output potential, because there is less resistance with 0w than 5w, but the trade is increased engine wear.

5-40 should be easy to find. 0-40 would work just fine too. just find something that has the audi/vw approvals. and honestly with as many shops as you have down there, there should be plenty of shops that have the oil that you want.

get a good synth, and 5K OCIs are just fine. 3K is way to much. just change the oil filter every change.

Ok... IMO, 3K is not overkill. You do know that our engines are pront to sluge issues. Yes, you should use synthetic and change at a min. every 5k, but saying 3k is overkill is bad advice. Standard oil changes are 3 months to 3k. Yes, sythetic last longer. But if if you want your car to last, use common since and take care of it correctly....

I used to do it at 3k religiously, but now do it around 4-5k. IMO Definately don't go over 5k with our oil sludge issues, even w/ synthetic.

Also in my area Walmart carries Mobil-1 0w40 in the 5 quart jugs for ~$20, which is the best price I've found...it even is pretty close or the same as sale prices (if /wehn it is on sale) on 0w40/5w40 syn oil at auto part stores.

3K oil changes are for dino oil, if you use syn oil you can go a bit longer.

If you cant find 5w40 in any stores in socal just order some online. I just bought my redline oil from Summit.

3,000 mile intervals are fine for mobil 1 synthetic. Its dirt cheap, no reason to be cheap on something you do 4 times a year especially knowing the sludge issues.

Yeah for someone that only drives 12,000 miles a year, not so great when you drive 24,000 to 36,000 miles which would mean changing the oil 8-12 times a year. Syn oils can be driven to 7500 miles if you check them. Even some of the car manufactures suggest 5,000-7,500 mile oil changes.

every 5K you should change the oil. I use Lubro-Moly, my S4 loves it! It's high quality, pure synthetic, 5W-40 from Germany. I order it through a company in OC. Delivery is like two days. It has the VW-Norm 502.00 and 505.00 rating.

Re: 5w40 motor oil in So.Cal

    crib list:

Mobil 0w40 (502 approved) - almost any Pep Boys
Syntec 5w40 (502 approved) - almost any Autozone
Syntec 0w30 (502 approved) - almost any Autozone

if you want to get 'fancy' (i.e. Motul, etc) - Super Autobacs in Garden Grove.
if you're further south (Temecula) PureMS carries Motul and Elf

Do a 5k interval and use OEM oil filters.

Re: 5w40 motor oil in So.Cal

I still say that with a good synth oil, why throw your money away by doing 3K intervals. You can make yourself feel good all you want, its overkill. But if it allows you to sleep at night, by all means.

I'll stick with 5K, and I'll continue to recommend 5K intervals for this motor.

    FYI...
On a 1.8t, we did a blackstone UOA on redline 5-40. After 5,750 miles, it came back great! They even told us to run it to 7K and resample. The car has 115,000 miles they said everything was great. The car drives great.

FWIW, Redline and Elf are both really, really good "cleaning" oils. Meaning they have detergents in them that cleans the crap out of the engine. So if you are switching to either of them after using something else for a long time, the first drain will be VERY black, and I recommend that you don't go the full 5K. But after that, have at it.

In other engines, not as harsh as this, a good snyth should go 7500-10,000 easy.

Your FIRST oil change should be around like 1500..After that every 3-5K miles is okay.

Pure Motorsports which is in Temecula. They carry Elf NF1 which is top notch european oil. They are extremely quick with processing orders as well. I once ordered an air filter and wanted it shipped to a PO and it came the day after my online order.

When I was single and was paying rent for $100/mo hehe me and my buddy change oil every 2-3 weeks :D

I think that made my vw run smooth even it has almost 150K miles (99 model).

I think every 3K is fine.

I have been using Lubro-Moly for as long as I had my A4, it runs great. I am now in the market to see what other high end oils are out there that I can treat my car to.
Does anyone know where I can pick up some Elf NF1 in the San Gabriel Valley?

I've heard a bunch of things. But mostly, if you want to keep your engine running well, change the oil more frequently than every 10K. This applies to the B7S4 engine. Not sure it's a big deal with the A4 engine. But I'm sure it helps out!
