    Timing Belt - Difficulty

How hard is it change the timing belt and water pump yourself on a 1.8t?

How much would it cost to have it done somewhere?

    Re: Timing Belt - Difficulty

difficulty 4/10 (lots of stuff to take apart) its fairly straightforward though
if its your first time, chances are it will take you a full day
consequences are huge if you screw up your timing though...

    cost $ probably 800-1000$ at a shop

    parts are about 2-300$

there are many DIYs and this question has been asked a billion times.

use the writeup. and make sure you have all the necessary tools. it will take you some time to do. but it's really easy. my first time was like 5ish hours. second was less than 3. don't pay out the ass to have a shop do it.

You got all the tools you would need? I would still bring what I have but wondering if you have all the stuff. I would also do my valve cover gasket but need to pick up the sealant from Audi.

12/23/09 - My car has been phenomenal to me. Runs strong. Don't think I'm ever going to sell it. Rather throw $7k into it for a refresh than buy a new A4 that has no dipstick.

    Re: Timing Belt - Difficulty

While you're doing the valve cover gasket, do the injector O-rings too! Not that the two are related... but both of mine started leaking about the same time.

    Plus it's less than $10.
Upgraded the motor a little, brakes a little more, and suspension a lot.

    Re: Timing Belt - Difficulty

Thanks for the offer but I'm moving to FL.

I won't need the TB done till after I get there but my new house finally has a garage for me.

Is the Bentley Service Manual the best to use or are there better DIYs around?

    Re: Timing Belt - Difficulty

The Bentley is sort of tough to follow... it uses a special vag tool to put the car in the service postion (slide the bumper/radiator and support out, etc.) to get at the TB belt/water pump/tensioner and what not the DIY on here in the FAQs and DIY section is good with actual pics instead of half drawings in the Bentley.. IMO

I just pull the whole core support off my car. Its 12 bolts. Then slide the A/C condenser underneath the engine so you don't have to disconnect the A/C refrigerant.

^^^ yeah that is what we did and the DIY from here is better IMO. I was just saying the Bentley shows you how to do it the Audi tech way..
