Angry bad starter, car shut off while driving....

So I'm driving along and the engine just dies. the clutch was out and i tapped the gas and nothing... It got towed to the house, I vag-com'ed it and didn't get any codes accept a voltage too low for the airbag. I smelled how electronics/wires and saw smoke from over top the starter. watched the started w/ friend turning the key on and off ignition. after a couple clicks, I have smoke comming from inside the starter right under where the relay wire connects on.

I understand that means I need a new starter & relay. However, could that short or whatever it wrong w/ it cause me to loose all power as I'm driving down the road? Prior to today and this morning, the starter has started the car quickly every day all day w/ out problems.

Also could something else have caused that to burn up or did it probably just fail on it's own?

Thank all who may be able to help!!!!!!
