    Transmission issues?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So when the new clutch went in I also had the transmission oil replaced (because I could) with Lubro Moly 75W-90 synthetic gear oil.
The mechanic noticed that some of the transmission mount bolts were missing and one was really loose so he replaced them and tightened everything back up.
But, now I'm finding it hard to go into 1st gear and reverse sometimes. If I instead go into 2nd and then 1st it smooths out.
    Any thoughts?

If I remember correctly I think it was GL5 and our cars call for GL4 but isn't 5 supposed to be superior and should therefore work? (or not as the case may be).

I think your linkage might be bent or misaligned from all the movement.

    Re: Transmission issues?

GL4 is for the transmitions with brass gears in them aka syncos for the gears. GL5 eats brass. You can use GL5 in the rear diff but not in the transmition. Dont assume bigger number = better.

    Re: Transmission issues?

It was a GL5 but does not contain the additives found in some GL5 oils that cause problems with "yellow" gears.

So even though it shouldn't do damage I plan to replace it but what brand should I replace it with? Price isn't the issue, what is the best possible oil to put in there? (I know that may be subjective but I would still like opinions anyway)

    Thanks

    1st to 2nd isn't bad, it's neutral to 1st that's the most uncooperative.

    Re: Transmission issues?

My mechanic recommended Redline MT-90 or Audi G52.
Prey, is that the Redline you are recommending? I see three different ones listed on ecstuning.com ranging from $11 to $14, the MT-90 for $12 looks like the appropriate one of the three to me, please correct me if I'm wrong. (I guess the price went up)

    Re: Transmission issues?

Sorry to resurrect this thread but I'm still having issues.
I switched to the Redline MT-90 and that seemed to make it better for a while (not perfect but better). But it basically went back to being uncooperative again in a short period of time.

If I'm stopped and let the clutch out in neutral then when I try to get into gear again, any gear, it doesn't want to go in. But once I get into gear so long as I have the clutch in without letting it out in neutral I can change fairly smoothly. So once I'm driving it's fine because I don't let the clutch out in between coming out of one gear and going into the next. As soon as I stop at a light and put it in neutral I have the problem of getting back into gear the first time all over again.

My mechanic still thinks it's gear oil that's the issue. He says the synchros aren't grabbing the gears to line them up (hope I quoted that right). He said it wouldn't make any sense for the synchros to be worn out because they wouldn't all go an all gears all at the same time.

    Any thoughts?

P.S. The problems started when the clutch was done and the transmission oil was changed at the same time.

    Re: Transmission issues?

How much play do you have in your shifter? I know I have a shit ton and it makes it a pain to shift... I need to change out the shifter relay rod...

I'm not sure how to gage that, I would say there may be more play or slop than there was prior to the changes but I don't have a short throw shifter so I'm not sure what to expect from the factory setup anymore. I used to think it felt nice and easy with not a whole lot of motion required so I never understood why anyone needed a shorter shift but now... ergh.

    Re: Transmission issues?

Everything seems lined up (not that I really know how to tell).
We put some fancy additive in, we'll see if that makes a difference...

    Re: Transmission issues?

    The additive hasn't helped.
One thing I noticed was that when my car was heavily loaded down with luggage a few days ago the problem wasn't very bad but once I got where I was going and emptied the car out the problem came back.
What would be changed by having extra weight that would reduce the problem?

    Re: Transmission issues?

Have your mechanic loosen the shifter connections under the shifter and adjust it so you can get into all the gears w/o issues. One connection goes to the transmission and the other is the reinforcement.
