    Exhaust question

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I am very confused about what exhaust I should choose for my brand new 2008 a4. Its not Quattro though.

My friend had said a full on straightpipe would be very nice on the car, but I don't know what to do. He said he can make it for me for about $100. And it is reasonably loud and can give me the max performance as needed.

If any of you have experienced a straight pipe on this model..

    Is it worth it?
    Is it too loud?

    Inform me, thank you.

    Re: Exhaust question

its worth it. i have 3 friends with test pipes with stock exhuast. its not loud at all. its start up sounds the same IMO they say its a LITTLE louder but their around their car all day. but ya its worth those extra torque points. it is just loud when u drive it up to 3500 K and past it will be loud. just as long as u drive under that its pretty much stock. and make sure u get a defouler or else ur CEL will turn on

    Re: Exhaust question

You don't have a honda. Buy a real exhaust for your real car. What I mean by that is do one of two things...just put a tp on there and forget about it. Or get an exhuast from one of the reputable tuning companies that make it. I have a STaSIS exhaust. It's not too loud and it's not to quiet. It sounds good at WOT and there is hardly a drone. If you were to go do straight pipes all the way back into a couple of mufflers you have so much drone you would ruin the nice, quiet ride you have now in your A4.

The stock RS4 is very loud. I wonder if it gets annoying or drones while cruising?

    Re: Exhaust question

I always liked the Stasis exhaust.

Along with the Stasis, the AWE Tuning exhaust is very nice too and they're both about the same price.

    Which would be better?
    But they cost too much.

    Re: Exhaust question

Well.....Between the two "regular exhausts" I'd take a STaSIS setup. However, AWE is about to release a quad tip. If I had the choice a few months ago, I'd have gone with the AWE Quad Tip. I still may, as I may have someone that is willing to buy my STaSIS.

I am very happy with my Neuspeed exhaust - sounds great and the higher back pressure gives great HP and torque gains.

You will have so much drone you wont be able to think. But hey, if you want it to sound like a honda, that's cool.

I just got Stasis exhaust for my B7 A4 2.0T because I was looking for something quiet, sounding more like an Audi and not Honda. I have also read very good reviews on it. Unfortunately after it has been installed it resonates with cabin between 2000 and 3200 rpms, right at 80mph in 6th gear. It gets a LOT more quiet above 3500 rpms. The noise is so loud that the car radio continously compensates for it by increasing the volume. I am talking about easy cruising speeds no heavy engine loading.
I hope this is the installation issue and not how it should behave.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Re: Exhaust question

I had my car checked twice and there are no installation issues. I was also told that all freeflowing mufflers/exhaust systems have the drone effect at lower rpms.
I am waiting for mine to break-in and will see what happens. I am also researching additional acoustic insulation for my car's trunk area.
If you want your car sound like a stock V6 or S4 V8 then I don't think these exhaust are for you, definitelly louder at low rpms and quieter at higher rpms. If you don't want your car to sound too loud then try jsut removing the stock resonator and see if it work for you.
Unfortunatelly it is a trial and error, everyone of us defines the loud and quiet differently.

I wonder why they did not design it with resonant frequecy around the 4000, 5000 rpm range instead of around 3000 rpms where you spend most of your time while driving.

    Re: Exhaust question

Well here's the thing. It's all about sound waves. So when you're driving slow, the engine is moving slow you have much bigger sound waves, a much lower frequency. Which also can be felt more. So that's what the drone is. The resonators are there to keep that to a minimum, however there is still a little, but I barely notice it. When you go faster the sound waves get smaller and the frequency goes up, it doesn't sound as loud in the cabin, but from the back of the car, the exhaust is pretty loud.

    Re: Exhaust question

I'm talking about my Stasis catback. Still have doubts about it operating correctly on my car, but unfortunatelly I cannot compare. Basically my car is about 5 times louder (I measured this) at 3000rpms than at 4000rpms. Anyone in Chicago area with Stasis catback?

good explanation in general terms... as the engine comes to speed at high RPMs, the frequency of the resonation increases (becomes more frequent) and you will "hear" it more but so frequent that it becomes more of a hum than a bump bump bump at lower RPMs. However, the sound waves aren't "bigger" (if you talking about hitting harder). Best way to think of it is when at lower RPMs it sounds more like your midrange speaker which has an extra "bump" to the bass as where higher RPMs it sounds like your tweeters (less harder hitting).

Should've bought a Milltek. I'm not going Stasis for the same reasons you are complaining. Right now, for me, it's between APR and Milltek.

I would got with Stasis, I just got mine and it sounds great. has a nice throttle response, and does not get super loud except when it is suppose to. overall I think it looks amazing also. All the tuner companies are approx the same price, so listen on Youtube and decide which one you like best.

    Re: Exhaust question

Because it's expensive as hell...very high quality but for the same price as a cat back you get 2 rear silencers.

BtW to the guy with the Neuspeed claiming higher backpressure gives you HP, BS flag! You want LESS backpressure on any vehicle starting from the catalyser back.
