Question TT Quattero for a new driver? General questions.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm 17 and just got my license, and I'm shopping for a car. I've saved up a little over 12k. There are several questions I have, hopefully this is the right place to post them.

    1. Are TT's safe? This is for both insurance and for my parents.
    2. Is insurance going to be more costly than other Audi's of that same year? I am looking at 2001-2003. I also have a clean record.
    3. Are they reliable?
    4. Will repairs be more costly than other luxury cars? Namely Saab and Lexus.
    5. Will I get close to the 30 highway miles that are advertised?
    6. What octane of gas is best? Will it run on 87?

This is all I can think of at the moment. If just one of these gets answered, I will be greatly thankful.

1: Yes the TT is safe. If your parent's are worryed tell them to buy you a Hummer
2:It depends you are 17 so no matter what u get with 2 doors your insurance is going to be high untill you can establish a good driving record and untill you hit 25 years then it will go down
    3:As reliable as anyother car
4:IMO hell no. Buy a bently manual and Vag-com read about the car as much as you can and do it yourself
5: With very little mods and no speeding yes
6: All are 91 recommended octane. No 87 will not work
    Hoped this helped

Yes theyre safe. Just like all other audis and well-built cars. Insurance is gonna be high no matter what since ur 17. take care of em, keep up on maint., and theyll be reliable. Repairs are going to be pricey, but you can save a decent amount of money by doing the work urself. Not sure about the gas mileage, but I'd imagine you should be able to get close to 30 mpg on the highway staying outta boost (if its turbo). You'll probably have to run 91+ octane gas. GL!

^ i'd also encourage you to find a used B5 or possibly an older car. I had an '85 Chevy diesel van when i was 16, and some of my friends had nice/flashy cars... well, guess who got the tail?

unless you want to end up like the guys in superbad, consider buying something that doesn't scream "compensating 17 year old"... i mean, we're all in our 20's and 30's and when we drive a TT it screams "audi geek" or "technology job" (am i right?)

read this with a grain of salt, because i'm mostly just pissed you're 17 buying a TT! good luck, and let us know what you plan to do!

(throwing it out there, but 12k would get you a badass 20v quattro and a nice supply of 034 motorsport parts w/ a LOT less insurance)

Re: TT Quattero for a new driver? General questions.

    1. Safe as any other car
    2. Insurance will definitely be costlier although how much depends on many factors such as your age, years driving, etc. I have a perfect record, am over 25 and qualify for 5 year safe driving discount. I have an ultra low yearly premium, especially for NYC, but from a A4 to a TT my insurance jumped about $250 a year. Nothing crazy but still a decent hike.
    3. I would say overall the TT is NOT a reliable car. It depends on how lucky you are but TTs tend to have alot of issues. If you are worried about paying lots of $$ for upkeep I suggest you check outside of the Audi brand in general. They are great cars but generally have lots of small issues.
    4. Actually I found repair costs relative to other luxury brands being less, only because it's easier to spot the problems because of the commonality of issues that arise on the Audis and also because people in the forums are so knowledgeable and experienced. That being said, parts and labor on Audis especially at the dealership can be ridiculous.
    5. Yes. If your car is running properly you will get great gas mileage. On largely stop and go city driving I get a solid 25mph and on highway upper 20s to low 30s.
    6. If you can't afford premium gas you shouldn't buy this car.

Check the forums for common problems.

I figured that I have worked hard enough to save money for college/a car, that I might as well treat myself to something decent. I should be in highschool another year, but I will be going to college full time in the fall. I plan on graduating with a business degree, and plan on starting an internship for that.

I don't want anyone to have the impression that I am having things handed to me, the only things I take from my parents are food and a place to live. I would rather work for what I have. Sorry if it sounds like I have an attitude about it, I don't want it to come off that way.

Two paragraphs later, I remember that we are talking cars, sorry for the rant!

I think I am going to pass on the TT, but not on the Audi brand. I think that an A4 will suit me best, and I am also looking at your suggestion! Believe it or not, your post helped a good amount

Reading what you said about insurance and reliability really helped. That is ultimately what helped me decide.

I thank all of you for the help, and will return the favor in the future.

Now I am going to go look into some other Audi's and see what I can find

    Get an A4.

Cheeper on insurance, maintance is wayy cheeper beucase parts are easier to find and not as costly (canada tt shit is imposible to find anything) fuel conception in my car on highway doing 105km/h i get 6L per 100KM, cheeper insurance get a A4 as the tt is a "Sports car" my A4 is actaully faster then my buddies TT (180hp) and we have the same mods, A4's are nice and reliable, find a lower k one and ur golden

Re: TT Quattero for a new driver? General questions.

Haha I'm sorry! My intention was not to steer you away from a TT but just wanted you to understand the realities in owning one.

I went from an A4 to a TT so obviously there is something about the TT that enamoured me to the car. In my personal experience so far, I've had to only replace my brakes on the TT. On my A4 on the other hand I had several issues but all relatively easy to diagnose and repair.

I enjoyed the A4 but ultimately I wanted something sportier and more compact. The A4 is a great handling car for a sedan, but with the Quattro especially it is still a heavy ride.

I do love my TT and have had no problems so far but I haven't owned it very long. I fully expect it to have some of the same kind of various issues others have had. If I don't, I'll be pleasantly surprised, but if I do, at least I know what to expect and won't be too bummed about it.
