    Anybody done this?...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have an 02 A4 with the sport package, 17" wheels. The car is dolphin grey. A couple of the wheels have some curb rash (previous owner!), and I'm looking to have them redone. I'm thinking possibly a flat black or dark gunmetal. Anyone ever done this color combo, pics? I'll even take pics of comparable wheels/colors on a dolphin grey A4. Thanks in advance!

I have searched, and I still am. There's a lot of stuff to go through on this site, but thanks for the info. Do you remember what kind of paint you used?

    Re: Anybody done this?...

Just in case you have not done an Advanced Search yet it will narrow down your search a lot. Just click to titles only and in the B6 section.

I used 320 grit (i think) sand paper to get off all the old paint. Then shot some sandable black primer (smoothed It with 600 grit paper). Followed that with Dupli-Color High proformance wheel coating, then Dupli-Color clear coat. Bought all the stuff a Auto Zone.

If you still have have not found any pics you like shoot me a PM and Ill put a pic up for ya of mine.

My curb rash isn't TOO bad, and it's really only on one wheel, but it still drives me crazy. What did you use to fix yours?

    Re: Anybody done this?...

I'm seriously leaning towards black. I've seen a lot of the DG's with gunmetal, and it just seems like a whole lot of one color. The gunmetal just matches it too well, and it all seems a little too monochromatic. I'm thinking a nice flat black, shiny black is overrated.

If you are tired of the stock silver then you will be happy with either one. I have only had one friend tell me they liked the silver better.

Thanks, but I think I want to get away from the silver. I'm saving up for new wheels, but for now I want something other than stock wheels in the stock color. I think the silver looks off on the dolphin grey. JMO.

    Re: Anybody done this?...

I guess I'm just tired of silver stock wheels. I've had them on so many cars (although I'd replaced most of them). I guess I just want something to set it apart from the other Audi's around here for the time being.

    Re: Anybody done this?...

flat black reminds me of steelies... not a good look, IMO. To each his own though. At least you wont have to worry about brake dust anymore.

Black on black is just too much... black. I suppose I just like colors too much to do that. I have a black car but only because the deal was too good to pass up. I've considered repainting my Champions a gunmetal, but a lighter shade than most, basically darker than silver and ligher than gray.

In the end, the only thing that matters is that you are happy with the way it looks, F everyone else's opinions.

    Re: Anybody done this?...

I would never do black on black either. IMO silver or chrome on black (yeah, I know, chrome is heavy and can be ghetto). I might do some photoshopping tonight to see what I like.

    Good how-to here.

I used Duplicolor Wheel paint. Used the graphite color (dark metallic gray) and it turned out really nice.

This thread might help. 2nd on flat black looking dirty. I'd go with matte black myself.

    Re: Anybody done this?...

Shedpress, thanks for the DIY, that will definitely come in handy.

darkness, thanks for the link. I like the way that Avant looks. The other pic is kinda hard to make out, pretty blurry.

Now that I've seen pics of both, I'm even more torn. I believe it's photoshop time. Thanks for the input everybody, keep it coming!
