Audi Recalling A6 To Fix Gas Tank Problem
WASHINGTON — Volkswagen is recalling 68,240 Audi A6 vehicles due to faulty gas tanks. Specifically the recall affects 2001-'04 Quattro models with the 2.7-, 2.8- or 3.0-liter engines and 2001-'05 Allroad Quattro cars with the 2.7- or 4.2-liter engines.

Watch out because I already experienced this nightmare about six months back before this recall!

Keep in mind they have to remove the whole rear quattro system (if app) to get to the tank...... They actually had to replace my whole tank.

The real shitty part is that although Audi knew damn well this was a know issue they wouldn't cover it....I ended up fighting through my aftermarket warranty company and pulling some strings to get it covered. Otherwise there was going to be a huge battle with Audi !!

Could you please expound on the last point you made "car spent 1 full month in the dealership"???

Was that because you were battling with who was going to pay for the repairs? Or does it seriously take that much time to fix the problem? If so, that is a huge "oops" by Audi engineering.

It was the total time my car was in the shop between identifying the issue and going to Audi of America and then back and forth with the Warranty Company, and 2 adjusters later with mostly my leg work talking to different people.
The actual issue itself would cause about one week down now that there is a recall, they would have order the tank, and the job itself is about a 13-15 hr job start to finish.

Either way it is a joke, when I was looking at the charges it was like $3600

I said there is obviously a huge design flaw by Audi being that a little $2 plastic breather valve on the top of the tank that is going to eventually go bad then causes a whole fuel tank to be junked and replaced because it was a non-replacable part! You are crazy if you think that I would even think about paying this.

I was ready to go to some pretty extensive lengths if I didn't get it covered

There was fuel spraying out of the top of the tank
The scary part was this went on for sometime (months). I kept smelling something on some mornings but fuel evaporates off so quickly that there was never a puddle or anything to identify where it was coming from or what it was. Later I realized it was only on days that I had 3/4 tank or more

I am pissed because I know damn well this was going for sometime and progressively getting worse, I truly feel that it was ignored at the dealership while I was under factory warranty because I had mentioned a strange odor multiple times before and they never found anything but the first time I saw my car on a lift It was obvious from the drip stains on the tank that I had a fuel leak. You think they would have taken it a little more serious

What would happen was after I would fill up my tank and it was pressurized it would then force the gas through the leak... literally spraying out towards the end...(god imagine how much gas I wasted
I actually had it in a local VW/Audi shop-Fixx Tuning for some other things and was complaining so they actually found the fuel leak! We replaced the fuel sending units, but this did not correct the problem so thats how it led up to the true problem.
With as long as I drove like this I am lucky I didnt spontaniously combust.

Thanks for the reply. I just recently noticed that I'll have a section underneath my gas cap that has gasoline on it (on the actual paint). I wondered what the hell the deal was, since I'm always very careful not to over-fill or allow any gas to drip when taking it out. I wonder if that's the actual "problem" that we're discussing, causing gasoline to leak while driving

No, that sounds like a seperate issue I have heard of.... where the neck that runs from the filler to the tank goes bad and leaks. Thankfully for your sake its is a much cheaper and easier fix.

i need to see if its only after i fill up, becuase i don't smell it every day, but it's definitely gas I'm smelling

i'm guessing the sedan 4.2's aren't affected? i'll stop by my dealer anyway and get it cheked out
