Went to the dealer with one car...came home with another one.

Not as awesome as the title sounds... Went to the dealership in my A4 to get my tires swapped over (the dealership had put someone elses tires on my car before I owned it and once I bought it, I got the great news that I was going to have to drive back up there, an hour and twenty minutes away, to have the job corrected). I get a call about an hour and a half later to find out that one of my lugs for my rear right had either been stripped by them or... well it had to be them they're the only ones who have touched it. So they tried to re-thread it and ended up cross threading the hub. Now I get to wait for my new hub, bearing, etc.... They told me the job will be covered under extended warranty and got to drive home in an A6.

Not as bad as other dealership horror stories but still a pain in the ass since I can't drive the loaner like I would my daily driver.

Any idea how much this would have cost if it was not covered?

Um, a new lug usually costs < $5. And you could easily do it yourself if you know how to use a lug wrench and a hammer.

And no offense, it wasn't your fault they put someone else's tires on your car. The dealership should have fessed up and swallowed the cost of that screw up. Were they good tires?

They they are taking car of everything, no cost to me. That's why I was wondering how much it would have cost to replace the hub/bearing/whatever else is involved in that?

Tires coming off were Pirelli P6's and they didn't tell me what was going on...only that they were muchhh better tires?

they should compensate you more considering you need to drive 1h20min each way. tell them you will not settle for anything less than an rs6 loaner to make up lost time.

I guess one thing I was able to do with this situation is get a good comparison of OEM HID vs. my VVME 6000k conversion in my halogen housings.

    OEM HID:

VVME 6000k conversion in halogen housings:

I was a little bit closer to the garage for the OEM pic but I can honestly say that while driving I haven't noticed that much of a difference in light output. Definitely not enough difference for me to go pay $500+ for xenon housings.

Sorry if I was unclear but AudiA4_20T was correct... they cross threaded the hub trying to re-thread it.

Well, then that's all together different. Rear hub replacement would easily be $800+. Mind you, I'm going off Toyota service price guides, and that's for an Avalon, so you're probably looking at a lot more than that for an Audi.

Re: Went to the dealer with one car...came home with another one.

Whenever I took mine in, they knew the loaner would have a lot of miles when I brought it back in, I live 123 miles from my dealership! The contract I sign says no more than 100 miles/day, but I told them it would be impossible, and they then told me to not worry about it

I had an 07 A4 for 17 days last time I was in, they had to replace my A/C control panel, but it took a while to get it in from wherever they got it. The car had ~8300 miles when I got it, when I turned it back in, it was just over 12000 miles, and they didn't say a word about it

The good thing about this is you should get a new bearing out of it as well; it doesn't make sense to press an old bearing into a new hub. I had the same thing happen at a tire shop and they paid for a new hub and bearing.

You cannot press the old bearing into a new hub, removing the bearing destroys it b/c it pops the inner race out.

IIRC the actual hub is not an expensive part, and as long as the car doesnt have excessive miles that would make the R&R diffucult (ie siezed bolts, etc) then I can't imagine it costing more than $500. I would estimate 4 hours max for the job, its exactly the same as R&R wheel bearings, something that techs should be very efficient at doing.

I wonder how they managed to damage the hub, my only conclusion is the tech used a gun before it was properly started by hand. I've seen that happen more than once.

I agree they should compensate you for your time, but they probably wont. Maybe ask them to detail the car for free next year *shrug*
